Pirates Prospect Watch: Derek Diamond Continues Pitching Well in Relief

Derek Diamond pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in the Arizona Fall League on Friday night.

Diamond took over in the fourth inning with one out and Scottsdale up 4-1. He allowed a two-out double, but got a fly out to escape the inning. Diamond returned for the fifth inning, picking up a scoreless frame around a walk. After a strikeout and a lineout, Diamond issued the walk. He picked off the runner to end his day.

After the latest outing, Diamond has a 2.70 ERA in 10 innings during the AFL season. He’s getting relief work for the first time in his pro career, but has been pitching well regardless of the role.

SCOTTSDALE won 4-1

  • RHP Derek Diamond: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RHP Eddy Yean: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Eddy Yean pitched a scoreless eighth inning, recording one strikeout. Yean retired the side in order, getting a ground out, the strikeout, and a pop out to send the Scottsdale lead to the ninth inning. Yean also pitched a scoreless inning on Wednesday.

STATCAST HEROES

Diamond Stuff: Derek Diamond got four whiffs on nine swings against his four-seam fastball, along with three called strikes for a 39% CSW. He threw the pitch 93.7 MPH, ranging from 91.2 to 95.4. He threw seven sliders and two changeups, only getting one called strike between the secondary offerings. The slider was in the 86 MPH range, while the changeup was around 84 MPH.

Yean Stuff: Eddy Yean had some of the best velocity of the game, averaging 95 MPH and ranging 94-95.8 MPH. He didn’t have any whiffs, but had three called strikes on the fastball. His fastball/slider combo was in the zone around 70% of the time.
