Pirates Prospect Watch: Sammy Siani Assists Derek Diamond in the AFL

Published:

Derek Diamond got the start in the Arizona Fall League on Sunday, and he got some help from a fellow Pirates prospect.

After giving up a leadoff single, Diamond allowed a line drive double to Tommy Troy. The hit went to right fielder Sammy Siani, who began the 2024 season as teammates with Diamond in High-A Greensboro. Siani was there for his teammate, throwing to the cutoff man, with the relay getting the runner at home.

Diamond followed with two strikeouts to end the first inning.

The second inning started with a solo homer, which was the lone run allowed by the Pirates’ right-hander. Diamond got two fly outs and a ground out to end the inning. He retired the third inning in order, with two strikeouts and a fly out.

In total, Diamond allowed one run on three hits in three innings, with the solo homer doing the damage. He struck out four, didn’t issue a walk, threw 29 strikes in 44 pitches, and was helped by one of two assists from Siani.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE

SCOTTSDALE lost 4-2

  • RHP Derek Diamond: 3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HR
  • SS Termarr Johnson: 1-for-4, 3B, BB, 2 SB
  • RF Sammy Siani: 1-for-3, BB, SB
  • RHP Eddy Yean: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

Termarr Johnson went 1-for-4 at the plate, hitting his second triple of the season. Johnson also stole two bases. After walking to lead off the fifth inning, Johnson took second and third base during the next at-bat. He was stranded on third. Johnson’s triple came with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate. He was once again stranded.

Sammy Siani went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Siani singled in the sixth inning, then stole second, before ultimately being stranded. What stood out from Siani in this game was the defense. The outfielder had two assists. After throwing out the runner at home in the first inning to bail out Diamond, Siani helped out his teammates in the eighth with a catch and throw-to-first double play on a line out.

Eddy Yean pitched a scoreless first inning. He walked the first batter he saw, then got three outs in play. Yean returned for a second inning of work and started with a strikeout, before allowing another walk. This time, the runner stole second, and advanced to third on an error. Yean allowed a double to bring in the tying run, and end his day. His second run scored when his reliever allowed a two-run homer to the next batter.
