Pirates Prospect Watch: Omar Alfonzo Homers For Greensboro

Published:

Omar Alfonzo hit his third homer of the year in High-A on Tuesday.

Alfonzo went 2-for-3 with a walk and the homer in the middle of the Greensboro lineup. He singled to lead off the second inning, but was left on base. In the fourth inning, Alfonzo hit a solo shot to right field, giving the Grasshoppers a 2-0 lead.

The catcher has 82 plate appearances since moving up from Bradenton, hitting .232/.354/.377. Those are similar numbers to what he did in High-A, prior to his promotion. He consistently hit the ball hard in Single-A, with a double-digit walk rate, and with some power results.

In my latest prospect rankings, Alfonzo was the number 25 prospect in the system. He’s got a chance to remain behind the plate, but also has the power potential to provide value at first base.

DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA CURVE

ALTOONA lost 5-0

  • CF Sammy Siani: 2-for-3, 2B
  • C Carter Bins: 2-for-3
  • RHP Emmanuel Chapman: 3.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR
  • RHP Brad Case: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
  • RHP J.C. Flowers: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

Altoona’s offense combined for zero walks and four hits in their shutout performance. The hits came from Sammy Siani in the middle of the lineup and Carter Bins at the bottom of the order. Siani hit his 13th double of the season in Double-A. Brad Case had the best performance from the pitchers, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings, while also stranding two runners in the fourth inning.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

GREENSBORO lost 5-4, despite the homer from Omar Alfonzo.

  • 2B Duce Gourson: 1-for-4
  • 3B Shawn Ross: 1-for-4, 2B
  • SS Kalae Harrison: 1-for-3, 2B, SB
  • RHP J.P. Massey: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
  • RHP Alessandro Ercolani: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Duce Gourson has reached base safely in six of his seven games at the High-A level. Shawn Ross hit his tenth double of the season. Kalae Harrison hit his sixth double and stole his third base. J.P. Massey and Alessandro Ercolani didn’t have the best nights, combining for five runs allowed in seven innings.
