Pirates Prospect Watch: Big Days at the Plate For Malcom Nunez and Jack Suwinski

Published:

Malcom Nunez and Jack Suwinski combined for seven hits in the middle of the Indianapolis lineup on Monday, leading the Triple-A squad to a 12-1 victory.

Nunez went 4-for-5 with his 19th double of the season. Suwinski went 3-for-5 with a walk and two doubles, giving him six on the year in Triple-A.

In the first inning, Nunez put Indianapolis on the board with an RBI single. Suwinski added another run in the third with an RBI double. The game was broken open in the fifth. Suwinski hit a two RBI double, making the score 4-1. Nunez followed with his double, extending the lead to 6-1. Indianapolis added one more run in the inning, and five more in the ninth inning for the win.

Suwinski now has a hit in each of his last ten starts. He’s 14-for-39 during that stretch, with five doubles and four homers.

Nunez had a huge month of July, but couldn’t replicate that in August, putting up a .511 OPS. Monday’s game was his first multi-hit game since August 1st, after having five in the month of July. This four-hit performance can hopefully get the corner infielder back on track.

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

INDIANAPOLIS won 12-1, led by Malcom Nunez and Jack Suwinski.

Mike Burrows got the start, allowing one run in four innings. This was his third appearance in a row with four innings and one or fewer runs. He dealt with control issues, but only allowed two hits, helping to keep runs off the board. Jake Woodford resigned with the Pirates over the weekend, and pitched three scoreless in his return to Indianapolis. Liover Peguero hit his 26th double of the season.

Two of the runs were hit batters who stole second base and advanced further on a wild pitch. That sequence happened in the second and repeated in the third. Josh Hartle, drafted in the fourth round, made his pro debut. Fifth rounder Will Taylor hit his third double of his young pro career. After going 5-for-41 in August, Taylor is 5-for-9 in two games in September. Axiel Plaz hit his tenth double.
