Pirates Prospect Watch: Matt Gorski Homers, Doubles, and Steals a Base

Matt Gorski had a big night at the plate on Thursday, going 4-for-4 with a double, a homer, and a stolen base.

The Indianapolis outfielder contributed in a big way to their 10-6 victory. His 20th homer of the year came in the bottom of the second inning, a two run shot with two outs that gave Indianapolis a 4-2 lead. Gorski’s homer traveled 418 feet at 106.9 MPH. He capped off the scoring in the seventh inning with his 22nd double of the season, knocking in two runs to make the score 10-4.

Gorski’s double was his slowest hit ball of the night, at 87.3 MPH. He also hit two singles at 100.8 MPH and 96.6 MPH. After his single in the fourth inning, he stole second base, giving him 10 steals on the season. He later scored on a Billy Cook RBI single, making the score 6-4.

It’s been a big month of August for Gorski, who is hitting .294/.339/.627 with four homers and five doubles.

INDIANAPOLIS won 10-6

Thomas Harrington allowed two runs in the first and two more in the third. He maintained good control and had seven strikeouts in five innings. Jack Suwinski hit his fourth homer of the year, launching a two-run, two-out shot in the first inning. Suwinski is 9-for-27 with three homers, two doubles, and a triple in his last nine games. Ryan Borucki made his latest rehab appearance, throwing a scoreless inning.

STATCAST HEROES

The hardest hit of the game was a single by Yorke at 110.9 MPH. Liover Peguero also had a single at 106.2 MPH. The homer from Suwinski was hit at 103 MPH, traveling 377 feet. Harrington led with his changeup on Thursday, getting five whiffs on 15 swings, with four called strikes for a 30% CSW His fastball sat 92.5 MPH, touching 94.1, but only had a 15% CSW. He had one whiff and four called strikes on his cutter, with a 38% CSW on 13 pitches. He also had two whiffs and one called strike on six curveballs.

DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA CURVE

ALTOONA won 5-4 in 10 innings.

Nick Cimillo hit his third homer of the year in Double-A, with a three-run shot in the sixth inning to put Altoona on the board. He also drew a walk in the ninth to put the tying run on board. He was replaced by pinch runner Brenden Dixon, who came up to the plate in the tenth to knock in the winning run. J.C. Flowers and Eddy Yean combined for 4.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

GREENSBORO won 3-1

Carlson Reed threw six no-hit innings, striking out six batters. He allowed a run, after a leadoff walk in the first, a stolen base, and two ground outs to score the run. That actually raised his ERA to 0.73 in Greensboro. In 24.2 innings across five starts, he has a 29:9 K/BB ratio. Carlos Jimenez made his first appearance in High-A, throwing two shutout innings in relief. Mitch Jebb hit his sixth triple and stole his 40th base of the season. Hudson Head also hit his sixth triple of the season.

Connor Wietgrefe, drafted in the seventh round this year, made his fourth appearance. He’s allowed one earned run in eight innings, with nine strikeouts and one walk. Esmerlyn Valdez hit his 19th homer of the season, while also drawing three walks. Andrew Patrick, drafted in the 17th round, had two hits and his second stole base. Carlos Caro made his Single-A debut, hitting his first double.

STATCAST HEROES

The homer from Valdez traveled 400 feet at 110.5 MPH. Wietgrefe threw 14 changeups, getting two whiffs and two called strikes. He also had two whiffs on five swings on his slider, with four called strikes for a 67% CSW. His fastball sat 92.4 MPH, touching 93.5.
