Pirates Prospect Watch: Charles McAdoo Hits His Fourth Homer For Altoona

Published:

About one year ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates drafted Charles McAdoo in the 13th round out of San Jose State. On Sunday afternoon, ahead of the 2024 MLB Draft, McAdoo hit his fourth homer of the year in Double-A.

McAdoo went 3-for-4 for Altoona on Sunday, hitting a solo shot in the first inning to put the Curve on the board. McAdoo also hit his fourth double, and scored two runs in the 5-3 victory.

The Pirates started McAdoo in Greensboro this year, moving the corner player to third base as he adjusted to pro ball in his first season. The adjustment hasn’t looked like a difficult one, even with the move to third. He hit .336/.415/.561 with nine homers in 258 plate appearances with Greensboro. McAdoo has also shown quick reactions, a good glove, and a strong arm at third base.

After Sunday’s game, McAdoo is batting .279/.380/.544 in his first 79 plate appearances in Double-A. McAdoo has a 22.8% strikeout rate and a 13.9% walk rate at the higher level.

In my most recent prospect rankings, McAdoo jumped to 8th overall in the system, as part of a tier of likely future starters in the majors.

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

INDIANAPOLIS lost 6-5

  • C Henry Davis: 1-for-4, HR, RBI
  • LF Matt Gorski: 1-for-4, HR, RBI
  • RF Edward Olivares: 2-for-4, 2B
  • CF Gilberto Celestino: 1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI
  • 1B Malcom Nunez: 1-for-4, 2B, RBI

Indianapolis scored four runs in the seventh inning, led by a solo homer from Henry Davis. It was the ninth homer in Triple-A this season for Davis. Matt Gorski added the fifth run with a solo shot in the ninth inning, hitting his 15th homer of the year.

STATCAST HEROES

The homer from Davis traveled 379 feet at 104.5 MPH. He also hit a 378 foot flyout at 100.9 MPH. Gorski’s home run was hit 409 feet at 103.9 MPH.

DOUBLE-A: ALTOONA CURVE

ALTOONA won 5-3, fueled by the three hit day from Charles McAdoo.

  • CF Jase Bowen: 2-for-4, 2B, 3B, RBI
  • C Carter Bins: 1-for-3, BB
  • LF Dustin Peterson: 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI
  • RHP Enmanuel Chapman: 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
  • RHP Eddy Yean: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Jase Bowen hit his 13th double and his second triple. Dustin Peterson hit his fifth homer, a solo shot in the second inning. Enmanuel Chapman picked up the win, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings from the fourth through the seventh inning. Eddy Yean closed out the game with 1.1 scoreless innings. He now has a 3.04 ERA in 47.1 innings.

HIGH-A: GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

GREENSBORO won 4-1 in a shortened game that was called after five innings.

  • RHP Wilber Dotel: 5.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 1 HR
  • 2B Jack Brannigan: 2-for-2, HR, BB, 2 RBI
  • SS Mitch Jebb: 1-for-3
  • 3B Kalae Harrison: 1-for-2, 2B, 2 RBI
  • CF P.J. Hilson: 1-for-1, SB

Wilber Dotel had his best start of the year, setting a season high with eight strikeouts. This was the second best mark of his career, falling one short of the nine strikeouts in four perfect innings he threw on June 10, 2022. Dotel has had a mixed bag season, represented by the split of his starts over the last month. In the four good starts, he’s combined for three earned runs in 22 innings, with a 24:6 K/BB. In the four bad starts, he’s allowed 18 earned runs in 15.2 innings, with a 13:11 K/BB. Jack Brannigan hit his 15th homer of the year. It was also his fourth home run this week. He also added an RBI single during a three-run fourth inning.

SINGLE-A: BRADENTON MARAUDERS

BRADENTON won 6-5 in 12 innings.

  • C Omar Alfonzo: 2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI
  • DH Esmerlyn Valdez: 1-for-5, 2B, RBI
  • RHP Luigi Hernandez: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
  • 2B Keiner Delgado: 1-for-4, BB
  • RF Miguel Sosa: 1-for-4, 2B, BB, RBI

Omar Alfonzo hit his seventh homer of the year, and his third homer this week. Esmerlyn Valdez hit his 15th double of the year, giving Bradenton the tying run in the bottom of the 12th. They won the game on a walk-off-walk from Miguel Sosa. Luigi Hernandez was the best pitcher in a bullpen game, throwing four scoreless innings.

STATCAST HEROES

The home run from Alfonzo traveled 358 feet at 109.4 MPH. Valdez hit his double at 103.1 MPH.
