Pirates Prospect Watch: Charles McAdoo Homers and Has a Web Gem in Double-A Debut

Published:

In his first game at the Double-A level, Charles McAdoo kept hitting. The third baseman was recently promoted by the Pirates from Greensboro after batting .336/.415/.561 with nine homers in 258 plate appearances. In his first game for Altoona, McAdoo went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk.

McAdoo picked up his first hit in his first at-bat, hitting a ground rule double to lead off the second inning. He walked in the third inning, then hit a two run homer in the fifth, extending the Altoona lead to 5-1.

In addition to the offense, McAdoo flashed the glove on the very first defensive play in the bottom of the first, ranging far into foul territory with a strong and accurate throw to first base to get the first out of the game.

This was a great debut for McAdoo, who has done nothing but hit since being drafted in the 13th round last year out of San Jose State. The Double-A level will be a better test of his hitting abilities over time.

TRIPLE-A: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

INDIANAPOLIS lost 3-2

  • LHP Martin Perez: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

  • DH Ji-Hwan Bae: 2-for-4
  • C Joey Bart: 0-for-1, BB

Martin Perez made his first rehab appearance, pitching five innings and throwing 63 pitches, with 41 for strikes. The Pirates have been opting for bullpen games in his place, and the next time they would need a starter is on Wednesday. That wouldn’t be enough time for him to have five days rest, but he could return by next weekend, or in the week after a second rehab outing. Ji-Hwan Bae played a full game as the DH. Joey Bart played a partial game behind the plate.
