Andrew McCutchen and Ke’Bryan Hayes Head to Injured List; Ji-Man Choi Returns

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced prior to Friday night’s game that Andrew McCutchen and Ke’Bryan Hayes were both placed on the 10-day Injured List.

Right-handed pitcher Cody Bolton was recalled from Indianapolis. Ji-Man Choi was activated from the 60-day Injured List. Left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny was designated for assignment to clear 40-man roster space for Choi.

McCutchen is dealing with an elbow injury, while Hayes has the same back issue that sidelined him until yesterday when he was activated off of the IL for one game. With four days off due to the All-Star break, it seems like the best time for these issues to arise, especially if they are going to miss the minimum amount of time.

McCutchen is hitting .268/.383/.425 in 74 games this year. He has not collected a hit this month, dropping his OPS 46 points since the end of June.

This is Bolton’s fourth stint with the Pirates. He has allowed 11 runs on 17 hits and ten walks over nine innings for the Pirates.

Choi has been out since early April. He started rehabbing two weeks ago. He has hit .323/.436/.710 in nine games split between Altoona and Indianapolis.

Zastryzny has a 5.29 ERA and a 1.94 WHIP in 17 innings with the Pirates this season. He allowed four runs over 3.2 innings of rehab with Indianapolis.

Swaggerty on Rehab

The Pittsburgh Pirates had some moves ahead of Friday night’s minor league action. Here’s a rundown.

Outfielder Travis Swaggerty has been sent to Greensboro on a rehab assignment. The 25-year-old has missed significant time twice this season, with what has been described as an illness.

Swaggerty last played for Indianapolis on June 4th. He was back for two weeks at that point, after missing five weeks in late April/May. He had just two hits during that return, which included rehab time with Bradenton. He’s hitting .200/.278/.369 over 17 games for Indianapolis this season.

Left-handed pitcher Anthony Solometo has been transferred to the Development List for Altoona, which is likely just a move to open up a roster spot over the weekend for infielder Domingo Leyba. Solometo pitched last night. Altoona has three games this weekend, then four days off for the All-Star break, so it’s going to be at least a week before he pitches again.

Leyba was off to an outstanding start this season for Altoona, though that’s coming from someone with big league experience in Double-A. He hit .325/.400/.450 in 23 games. He was actually on the Injured List twice this year, though his return didn’t even last a full game before he was injured again.

Right-handed pitcher Brandan Bidois returned to Bradenton from the Injured List. This is a great sign, considering how much time he has missed since signing with the Pirates. He also looked terrific before the injury, which only cost him 12 days. Bidois has pitched just 12 innings in pro ball, but he was up to 99 MPH this spring, which earned him a promotion to Low-A Bradenton.

Right-handed pitcher Jorge Ramos has been placed on the Temporary Inactive List for Bradenton. This is probably the same type of situation as Solometo, as he just pitched yesterday and Bradenton is two days away from being on an All-Star break. It opened up a spot for Bidois.

Endy Rodriguez is also on the Temporary Inactive List now, but that’s only because he’s going to the Future’s Game. Greensboro pitcher JP Massey will join him in that game.

If anything else comes up today, we will add it here.
