Prospect Watch: Two DSL Pirates Wins on a Light Day of Action

Published:

Only the two Dominican Summer League teams were in action on Tuesday. All seven affiliates are off on Wednesday. So today is a shortened version of our usual Prospect Watch article. We have one featured player, who was just recognized for his performance last week. The regular full length Prospect Watch article will return on Thursday.

Kevison Hernandez, RHP FCL Pirates

Right-handed pitcher Kevison Hernandez (pictured above) was named as the Florida Complex League Pitcher of the Week on Monday. The 20-year-old signed out of the Dominican Republic in April of 2021. Hernandez pitched twice last week, beginning with a terrific outing in which he tossed 3.2 shutout innings while striking out eight batters. He had seven strikeouts over five appearances going into that game. He then threw 1.2 shutout frames to finish the week.

Hernandez was a late signing who bloomed late at well. He was a big kid with room to fill out, standing in at 6’5″, 188 pounds. He was throwing 92-93 MPH at the time, with a fastball that had sinking action. He had a curve with potential and a changeup that flashed average or better. There were thoughts that he could possibly end up as a starter, even though he profiled better as a reliever. Even though he was a little older, the frame, long arms, athleticism and arm speed all pointed towards adding more velocity.

Hernandez debuted well shortly after signing, posting a 2.78 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 22.2 innings, though it came with too many walks (15). He was injured for most of 2022, coming back too soon the first time, just to go right back on the Injured List until the last week of the season. The Pirates moved him up to the Florida Complex League this year, where he has a 2.57 ERA, a .189 BAA and 17 strikeouts in 14 innings, but his control was rough in June, before he threw plenty of strikes this past week. There’s a lot to like about Hernandez, but we just need to see better control show up, otherwise he won’t make it far in the system. Perhaps this past week is the first step in the right direction.
