Pirates Recall Cal Mitchell, Option Jack Suwinski

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced a group of roster moves ahead of Friday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies. They optioned outfielder Jack Suwinski and catcher Michael Perez to Indianapolis. In their place, outfielder Cal Mitchell has been recalled from Indianapolis and Tyler Heineman rejoins the team from the Bereavement List.

Suwinski has shown off good power this year, but he’s in a major slump of late, going 0-for-28 in the last ten days, which dropped him to a .198 average, to go along with a .716 OPS, 14 homers and a 30.5% strikeout rate in 72 games.

Mitchell hit .193/.227/.325 in 26 games for the Pirates earlier this year. Since being sent to Indianapolis on June 27th, he is hitting .375/.400/.479 in 50 plate appearances.

Heineman has been away from the team since July 5th. In that time, Jason Delay took over the top spot from Michael Perez, so Perez ended up back in Indianapolis. He hit .150/.209/.318 in 39 games for the Pirates.

The team also announced that Cam Alldred joined the team on the taxi squad.
