Pirates Discussion: This is Getting Fun

The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs by a 12-1 score yesterday, with Oneil Cruz and Bligh Madris making their debuts and making an impact on the score.

The Pirates will look to carry that momentum into tonight’s game, with Roansy Contreras on the mound.

Contreras taking the mound, backed by a very young group of prospects, makes this a fun team to watch. The Pirates are currently 12 games under .500, so this isn’t a contender. It is a team that currently has more upside than a normal 27-39 team, and that newly added upside will probably lead to more wins the rest of the year.

Tonight’s game is at 7:05 PM EST. We will post lineups when they are available. Use the comments below to discuss the big league club.

Every game yerry looks like he is gaining confidence as our 8th inning guy next year

Wilbur Miller

The last two days is what I wanted this season to be.

Plus, stomping the Cubs, which rocks.

roibert.kasperski

Saweeet!!

PirateRican21

PirateRican21

Hope to see Yerry pitch the 9th.

Wilbur Miller

Haha, had to pay attention. Seven pitches.

roibert.kasperski

I blinked……. 🙁

roibert.kasperski

You wish is Selton’s command!

PirateRican21

It was a hope, still have my three wishes!

roibert.kasperski

Make one of them a WS win in 2023!!

ricramer

He did well, very well.

PiratePrimate

We turn into the Lumber Company and I think we’ve got some pretty good mop up relievers

ricramer

Banda with two innings of “Please don’t DFA me” pitching.

jon6er

I was shaking my head listening to Walk and Brownie talking about Banda while ignoring he has a 6 run lead. He usually makes close games a 6 run lead for the other team.

pikebishop65

Memories of Tyler Glasnow over 2 plus seasons. Come into a game down two runs, throw 70 pitches, walking 6, striking out 7 and giving up 6 runs.

roibert.kasperski

Banda and his glasses reminds me of The Vanimal—Vance Worley.

PiratePrimate

Vanimal is available. He’s pitching for the Kane County Cougars

roibert.kasperski

Man, heads would explode on here if the Bucs signed him, lol!

jon6er

Indeed!

skliesen

I can’t help but think what might’ve been if Pirates had broke camp with Cruz and Madris.

Sigh.

1979andCounting

Instead of Tucker and Marisnak……two of the all-time worse OPS in MLB history. WTH was he thinking, slow-playing this “build”?

jon6er

Unreal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Captain Bligh

TNBucs

I don’t think it would have mattered but Vogie should have been running on contact instead of admiring his hit. Had he made it to 3rd, we’d have another run. But I don’t think he’d have tested Heyward even if he’d been hustling.

roibert.kasperski

Most likely he would be back on the IL just like he did after his triple a bit ago.

skliesen

Cruz is must see TV.

Wilbur Miller

I watched the replay of his single. The shift should have gotten it, but he just hit it too damn hard.

PiratePrimate

I’d pay just to watch him throw!

1979andCounting

He’s not exactly throwing strikes over to Chavis. Just saying…..

PirateRican21

Chavis defense at 1st is something I’m not used too as a Pirates’ fan. If only he could hit right handed pitchers.

TNBucs

We might need to move a catcher to 1B to handle those throws.

Wilbur Miller

Better be a catcher we don’t already have.

TNBucs

It’s a veiled reference to drafting Parada 🙂

Wilbur Miller

Works for me.

TNBucs

Or Davis plays 1B on days when Endy is behind the plate.

jon6er

6’7 guy throwing to a 5’10 guy. Chavis has better chance with the low throws then stretching or jumping for the high ones, lol.

Iowasteel

Cub’s starter yesterday was prone to walks, and that worked out. Today’s starter has been prone to the longball. So, hopefully, that homer is the first of many.

bucsws2014

That was a nice swing Perez laid on the HR.

roibert.kasperski

Extend Michael P……….no can’t do it……

PiratePrimate

A power hitting catcher, just like we want!

PiratePrimate

Good teams get the close calls 😊

mpg43952

Don’t care if Madden’s gone, I still enjoy beating the Cubs!

Wilbur Miller

Back in the day, I used to enjoy watching Leyland manage rings around Zip Zimmer.

PiratePrimate

Hey, poor Don went through life with a metal plate in his head. He had some excuses.

PiratePrimate

Certainly, now, considering their ownership

bucsws2014

One thing Nutting does deserve credit for – much as we wish anyone else was the owner, Bob doesn’t make headlines with his politics.

b mcferren

lets go bucs!

roibert.kasperski

Waiting for the roster moves!!!!!!

roibert.kasperski

As Buford T would say Sumbitch!!!! Eickhoff not going to be active until tomorrow……………I hate waiting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

roibert.kasperski

Happy Ro Day Y’all!!!!

RAS TN

Somehow Nick Gonzales went from missing a few days with a heel injury to being placed on the 60-day IL today for Altoona. Might see him in the AFL again this fall #Pirates

b mcferren

Peguero starting at second base tonight?

PiratePrimate

I’m just sitting here remembering how pitchers would be intimidated by Stargell’s, and especially McCovery’s size at the plate and I realize how intimidating Cruz could become. When a man that size hits a ball that hard, pitchers don’t like being 50 feet away from that swing.

AdministrativeSky236

Even as they grow and develop, aim to cut down Ks, etc. guys like suwinski and especially Cruz are infinitely more intimidating for opposing pitchers than what we started the year with. Takes pressure off of hayes and reynolds to do damage and lengthening the lineup will influence other team’s pitchers to the point that it will win us games

Wilbur Miller

Surprised Shelton is going with the same lineup. He usually only repeats tactics that don’t work.

jon6er

I’ve been waiting since last night to see what he would do since he thinks he’s always ahead of the curve. We can only hope they give Roansy at least half of the support they gave JT last night and DS doesn’t get crazy with the bullpen early. As long as Yerry as been up and with all the games guys like Stratton, Hembree, and Banda have pitched poorly in you would think at least by now we would know if Yerry could be the bridge to Bednar or not. Other than the two solo shots he gave up in the June 3rd Arizona game his 2nd mlb appearance nine days after his first he’s pitched rather well.

mpg43952

Yerry & the Frenchman should be pitching more, no doubt.

PiratePrimate

The same lineup? I’m shocked. How did Shelton get the dice to roll the same two days in a row?

TNBucs

It is worth noting that Perez replaces Heineman in the lineup, so Derek can keep his streak alive of never using exactly the same lineup twice in a row.

pikebishop65

Catcher right now as goes offense might as well be the pitcher batting, so to me it doesn’t matter who goes in that slot.

TNBucs

Equally amazing—we have a lineup three hours before game time. It’s easy when you don’t try to overthink things.

roibert.kasperski

The staffer who releases the lineup finally got it out early for a change.

joesolo6181

Not to be another Debbie Downer but does anyone really think that K. Hayes is going to be a great hitter in his career? I see him as a .250/.270 hitter with little to no power. He has a long term contract but is he truly worth it? Time will tell and I hope I am wrong about his hitting ability. Sure a great fielder and that counts for allot but you still need the bat, actually a power bat at his position.

TNBucs

As measured by WAR (which matches my impression watching games), Hayes has clearly been our best player this season and he’s on pace for approximately 5 WAR. I think he’ll show more power in the future because of his exit velocities, but if this is Hayes’ average performance over the life of the contract, I’ll still be plenty happy.

RAS TN

What’s sad is that a .250 and above is a borderline great hitter in the new baseball…

bucsws2014

Nobody’s saying .250 means a great hitter. But a .250 hitter may be a very good player as runs prevented are also valuable. Right now Hayes is the 18th most valuable player in the NL.

roibert.kasperski

Eickhoff is coming up and someone will have to come off the 40. Wonder if he is being Sulsered. Giving him a cup of coffee before being released so a temporary spot on the 40
being taken an most likely given back up when Underwood is back off of the Covid IL

Born4rf

Lost in this excitement is the excellent outing by Brubaker. In fact despite all the losing, our starters have been quite reliable over the last month or so. It has only been our inability to score more than one run per game that has destroyed our record. The bullpen has been quite reliable as long as they don’t have a lead to hold… When they do it is another story.

bucsws2014

As Walk noted earlier, Brubaker actually had competent defense behind him for a change.

Scrappy2499

This sure has the potential to be a fun second half…The young bats show off their huge potential…Jack attack, Mitchell, Cruz, Madris will have some growing pains but hard to deny they can all run into the ball more times than not. Reynolds is heating up a bit finally and if he can get to his old self that will be very helpful. Contreras has shown he isn’t overmatched so far in the least. Keller (fingers crossed) seems to be figuring some things out and has pitched much better the last couple times out. Bru doesn’t appear overmatched and belongs…Bednar is very nice to have on the back end and Crowe seems to like long relief more than starting and it appears to agree with him as well. Cruz sure didn’t seem to have any issues with hustling last night and appeared focused so that is very good to see. With our extremely low payroll in place, it sure seems set up nice to add a couple good pitchers and maybe a competent back up catcher to pair with Davis or one of the other promising catchers coming up.

BuccoinTN

Or a 1B platoon to pair with Chavis. I am concerned about Martin and not sure he will make it. Of course, could be possible to try and convert any of the plethora of LH OF prospects, or even Cruz (do hate thought of wasting that cannon though).

Scrappy2499

Chavis seems to be struggling against the righties for sure. A platoon could work with him since he does handle 1b good. I mentioned it yesterday but Cruz sure does seem locked in and focused at SS since the call up. In a perfect world he would continue to keep the focus and not be forced off SS unless someone like Peguero moved up and his bat was producing at a high level along with his fielding being leaps and bounds better then Cruz and forced him out to a different position.

jedeweese

I was leaning Cruz as a monster 1b/dh, um…
Give him the 6 until he proves he cannot hit the 1st baseman’s glove.

PiratePrimate

I woke up all excited and ready for this adventure and then I remembered, pitching wins championships and pitching costs money,

PiratePrimate

Very interesting. Thank you. Cruz, Reynolds, Suwinski, Madris, Hayes and Peguero look like a nucleus that will test those assumptions. Or so we hope!

John Fluharty

Tiny bit comforting to think we don’t have to have the best staff, just a pretty good one.

AdministrativeSky236

Our roster right now already has a higher floor and infinitely higher ceiling than the one that we opened the season with. Hoping to keep it this way even as veterans return from injury as getting these guys all more than a half of a season’s worth of experience will be huge for their growth and development

TNBucs

It will be interesting to see how they handle Gamel and VanMeter returning. I don’t think any focus want to see them take time away from rookies, but Shelton and most managers seem to prioritize veterans. I think both are decent role players, but we have so many prospects who need ABs that I don’t think they fit well with us.

bucsws2014

If we were actually trying to win games, I’d take Gamel over Mitchell for 4th OF. Mitchell has to hit for power to have value. One HR every 40 PAs isn’t gonna cut it.

Scrappy2499

Agree, with Gamel over Mitchell right now. He has been the more consistent of the two and he can play the corners plus 1b in a pinch.

Bill

Yes this is getting fun. Can you imagine being able to run a sprint speed of 31.5 ft./sec and then SMILING heading into 3B? You can put an entire Seinfeld marathon on when I’m on the treadmill & I’m pretty sure between gasps of air I’m wholly incapable of anything but a look of fear/loathing/terror

(And I’m pretty sure 2.1 on the treadmill is not an elite sprint speed)
