I think the beauty of baseball is that any team can beat the best team in the league.
The Pirates can beat the Dodgers. And then look like one of the worst teams in the league for a week. Inside of the same month.
Yesterday, the Pirates extended their losing streak to seven games with a 7-5 loss against the Cardinals.
Today, they take on St. Louis in a double-header. Game one begins at 1:15 PM EST, with JT Brubaker on the mound. Game two will feature Bryse Wilson at 7:45 PM EST.
We will post lineups when they are available. Use the comments below to discuss the big league team and both games today.

Lots of teeth gnashing over here. I’m still of the mindset that this year was a chance to churn the roster and get young, quick. It’s happening faster than I anticipated due to injuries. As long as the guys coming off IR don’t last long on the roster and it stays young, I’ll be happy. Tonight sucked and showed where the team is. It’s ugly. And I’m okay with that, for now. CSN just got the call. Cruz will be there…soon? If after the ASB they are still playing has-been a and retreads over the kids, I’ll join in with my pitch-fork. Commence calling me an idiot!
who did we trade Mikolas for again?
Chris McGuiness
The Bucs had him for 5 whole days til the trade to Texas. Texas gave up on him and released him and nobody wanted him. Went to Japan and learned to pitch.
You get what you pay for and we got nothing
Welp everyone wanted the kids. I still want the kids. Need them to play in the majors now so they can get the experience.
But they need major league ballplayers around them. Reynolds and Hayes are still young and not enough.
Patience Grasshopper. I have said for the last couple of seasons that once the kids started to arrive that there will be more viable additions coming from outside via some trades and some moderate FA signings. I believe that Hayes was give an indication of the plans or else he would have never extended giving up FA time. I hope that I am right and with all due luck we will all be happier this time next season 🙂
Suck it Mikolos!
Thank goodness their outfield loves to play in figuring they can get back to everything and they usually do making the plays look spectacular. Bader should have been back 3-4 steps. Cost his pitcher the no hitter.
Any team that fields Hoy Park, Yu Chang and Michael Perez in the same lineup deserves to be no-hit. Even in a rebuilding year, this is completely embarrassing.
I’ll be curious to see whether Dumbo has the teeny little bit of intelligence needed to hit for .102 Perez in the ninth.
Nope.

Now its Gorman…you know, the guy we had the good fortune of him falling to the Pirates but NH took Swaggerty instead…the rest is history. Cardinals are a major league baseball organization, while the Pirates are a clown show.
This embarrassing loss is on BC…for making the decision to bring Wilson back to Pittsburgh in any role, let alone starting a divisional game. If BC’s goal was to throw yet another game way by calling up the worst starting pitcher option available, he was successful. I don’t have much faith in BC…starting to understand how he did the impossible…getting fired as GM of the Red Sox. Then to make matters even worse, he calls up the worst bullpen option available in Hembree.
All of it’s on the GM. As incompetent as Shelton is, the simple fact is that this doesn’t remotely resemble a major league team. It’s not the clubhouse atmosphere, or the coaching, or knowing the right way to play the game. For the third year in a row, the hitting is horrendous and the pitching is very bad. There’s no sign of progress, nothing getting better. There aren’t any metaphysical reasons why they suck. There’s just one reason — They’re putting very bad players on the field.
I disagree about “all” of it being on BC. DS needs to wear some of the blame due to his inability to manage the game effectively with any consistency. Taking Thompson out after 67 pitches the other night is just one of many examples of piss poor managerial competence.
But the most blame definitely lies with Nutting. He has created this culture and he has absolutely no idea how to cure the cancer of losing he has methodically constructed for longer than either BC or DS have been with the organization.
Who cares if it’s a divisional game or against SD? Wilson shouldn’t start anyway.
I mean DS has control over the pen, not BC. Also, theres absolutely no reason not to use your worst bullpen arms right now as we are being blown out. As for not having a more viable depth starting option than wilson… that one is on BC lol
Wilson is fine. Just needs 2 innings to warm up.😄
Suwinski graduates from prospect status.
So if Bryce is gonna take one for the team, how many runs will Shelton let him give up before he decides to stop the batting practice?
Him and Marin are probably laughing about that right now, lol.
Goldschmidt-possible HOF’er-against Wilson, possible AAA pitcher. No contest. Goldschmidt is 2008 Pujols reincarnated Pirate killer.
He is the definition of a AAAA pitcher.
He’s not good enough to be AAAA….definitely AAA or worse
His picture’s in the book of AAAA pitchers.
It has been a rough day for pitching in the pirates org
The hitting has been no better
Looks like my evening is freeing up.
I don’t ever want to see Bryce Wilson on the mound for the pirates. Turns out he is not good at baseball.
I just need to adjust my expectations to account for the reality that with the young players we are basically putting out a AAA/AAAA lineup out there until these guys mature.
The players they have up here now will never be any better than what they are now. Other than Reynolds and Hayes it’s a team of Utility players, 4th outfielders and AAA/AAAA players.
That is a ridiculous hot take and almost for certain completely false.
Keep telling yourself that. Five years from now when they are STILL drafting in the top 5 maybe you will come to your senses
So this is what the fast track to oblivion looks like
We are in a bad way right now, something needs to change
Well, this is suboptimal.
At least we don’t have to worry about Hembree blowing a lead.
Im gonna put it out there, bryse wilson isnt good
we want a pitcher
not a belly itcher
So Bryse Wilson is still Bryse Wilson. Who’d have thought.
He just needs an opener
And a closer. And a few middle guys.
With this lineup the Pirates stand no chance in game 2. My Jolly Roger will be raised before theirs
TMI
are yinz going to post an article about Chavis being traded to the Braves?
AJ Smith-Shawver looks like a gamer!
I feel like the article should feature acuña jr more than that AJ dude, he will look really good in RF!
Castillo had his issues in game one. Glad to see him back out there for two. Maybe a good showing will wipe that one from his memories.
If I’m DS, when I bring the lineup card out for the game tonight, I’d ask the Ump’s if they plan on consulting Molina before making a call like they did last game.
Postgame DS says they got the call right but I missed any on field explanation from the umps if they gave one. To me they simply missed a call and end of story and especially since balks aren’t reviewable.
Well, two down and two to go, after that the Giants and Cubs on the very near horizon…
Come back later for game two of the doubleheader. Lineups will be posted as soon as they are available
Finally a liner to left/left center to drop in. Smalls out there now ??
CSN FOR NL ROY!!!!!
It’s time to win a game we don’t deserve
Wishful thinking.
Always good to dare to dream 🙂
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, Pirates waste a good pitching performance with an anemic offensive showing.
Won’t even get into the Little League quality defense played at SS.
Beede was really good. JT seems to get shoddy defense every time out.
Just give Molina a blue shirt. The other 4 guys wearing them clearly do whatever he tells them to do.
They need a little help since arguing a balk is automatic ejection but they will get around that by claiming Shelton was arguing the other crazy part of the play and not the balk. then on the other hand balks are not reviewable ‘by replay’ so they will use the umpire review thingy which I still don’t understand because the inning was over so we should hear some good bullshit from the league office on this one.
I don’t care what league office or the Blue Shirts say about the play, it’s plainly clear they decided since Molina thought it was a balk, it must’ve been a balk.
Hard to tell what was worse today, Castillo or the Blue Shirts.
I suppose when you’re shitty, shitty things come your way.
I was half joking when I wrote that but this was the most egregious and blatant case of favoritism I’ve ever seen at the major level.
The 5th umpire again.
Well now I thought Vogey got ejected. ?? Crazy to let him play 1B in a close game. You know he hasn’t taken any balls there since ST.
I could have sworn he was at 1B for a game or two early looking a little ugly but must have been spring training games.
after that chang home run, this is how cherington feels:
I’d been waiting for Chang to do that. The strikeouts began to drop. He was making solid contact. Just needed to get behind one that wasn’t right at someone.
Chang homers……………….
What the Yu Chang Homer really means………………….
Cha-Chang!
Timmy Chang
Todays a prime example of why not just anyone can play first base anymore than any infielder can play the outfield. Goldie picks most of those bad throws.
It’s a morning game in St.L. Castillo must have closed a place down at 5:00 a.m. this morning.
Actually he thought he was doing good by watching film all night of former MLB infielders making throws to try make himself even better. To bad he watched a lot of film of Pedro Alvarez, Josh Bell and Steve Sax…………………….
Probably not the best time to be picking on Steve Sax.
Did not know about his son until googling his name after you posted this. Sad to hear. Was not picking on Steve as a person. just was thinking of players that had issues throwing which he did. I lost my wife a couple of years ago and that was bad enough. Could never imagine having to bury one of my kids. Prayers for Steve and his family.
Poor kid. Over exposed and not ready for prime time
lol and there’s still a FULL game to go after this one
Yep get some dinner then get ready for another loss.
Let’s play two! Bad baseball is every American’s right to watch. We’ll even pay for it!
This is what happens when you field a team whose payroll is less than the price of a gallon of gasoline
To be philosophical about this, the notion seemed to be developing that this isn’t a bad team. Their miserable play — highlighted by guys batting .100, the bullpen giving up masses of runs, and other embarrassments — is at least clarifying, for anybody paying attention, that this roster still needs massive changes for this team to be competitive, much less a winner.
What?! But the smartest guy on Twitter, that Tim allegedly murdered for 2 minutes and 47 seconds, said this was a WC contending team. Then that they were a disaster. Then that they were a WC team again, especially if they’d just promote Cruz.
Must have missed this.
Castillo had been a very steady SS……until that inning! Three miscues. At least he made the last throw to Delay.
After three bad throws I’m surprised he didn’t carry the ball over to him, or at least roll it.
At best he’s a good utility infielder when he has had enough experience but to ask a minor league player to be an everyday major league SS is doing him a disservice and is one more reason that Bob Nutting is a piece of shit.
At the end of the day, he’s probably a replacement level guy
So he’ll be an upgrade . . . .
You replace shit with more shit, you still have shit
Ah but what is the consistency and firmness of the aforementioned feces.
As bad as it was, and it was the worst inning I can remember by a player ever, I was expecting worse once he started throwing the ball around.
I saw Tommy Davis make three errors on two plays in one inning in a World Series game so this was small potatoes but it’s one more indictment of Bob Nutting and his parisimonious ways
How did yadi just get a balk overturned? What
You think this is bad? Bring Cruz up and let him play short.
Can’t downvote this enough times.
Chuz has committed like 11 years in the last 28 games, but I doubt he’d hit 200 to go along with it.
Then you haven’t seen him play SS
Either that, or you haven’t seen the Pirates play baseball.
Or whatever it is they’re doing.
Hell, you want to bring someone up to play SS, bring up Peguero. At least we can live with errors if the guy is OJT but this just throwing warm bodies out to fill spots is embarrassing. This is supposed to be the Major Leagues.
Fine by me.
Am I watching a MLB game?
*rubs eyes*
This can’t be a major league game. No way.
Half of it is.
So THIS is what it must be like watching a DSL game
Without the fun
Can Castillo be sent down and Cruz called up between games today?
Strange part is Castillo probably had his best game as a Bucco last night.
What did i even just watch
