The Ghost of Sean Rodriguez will haunt this franchise until they win again
VanMeter is the Ghost of Sean Rodriguez.
Hey, he’s all the way up to .195, which puts him sixth on the current active roster. He’s angling for cleanup.
Since the Dodgers’ series, the Pirates are batting .183.
Good to see Mitchell, but he can’t turn this teeball lineup into a major league one. They’re still at least four bats away from being even decent.
Well I guess the ‘Oviedo Memorial Locker’ has new resident in Yerry!
Hoping a couple of those bats are already on the team and just need some time.
Only four? You mean there’s hope?
Well, lose shmoose. Contreras had a great outing and Mitchell had a pretty good debut.
What a freaking disappointment Reynolds has been.
A total bust so far this year for sure.
Really starting to fear that he may be a one year wonder.
He really has had two strong years, his rookie year and last year, but he looks more like ‘20 Reynolds. He has made some strong outs, including tonight, but he is killing them.
Still not buying the contact play……especially with 5 IFers. Don’t like it, never will.
Sean Rodriguez
Shelton’s willing to over use their best pitcher rather than open the locker and let Yerry out!
These two teams both need the ghost runner to score a run. I’ve come to like it too. Lots of drama and some stratagery
I like it in one sense. I challenges teams to try to play small ball by moving the runner over and then sacrificing him in.
I hate the ghost runner. I would be OK with it perhaps starting in the 12th inning.
Also a big fan of guy on 2nd (and 7 inning double headers)
watered down baseball
Yeah, but games are long enough as is. Save the “true” baseball for the playoffs, I don’t need 17-inning regular season games in my life or seven hours of double header ball.
No they’re not “long enough “ as is, if they adhere to the pitch clock. That will shave 20-30 mins off a game, as it has in the minors.
The 17 inning games happen maybe a half dozen times per year, so they aren’t an issue. The ghost runner is a solution in search of a problem. It’s a pathetic gimmick.
Well poop!
Cal is up! With the game on the line!
Let’s go!!
womp womp
Bummer
Van Meter pinch hits for Castillo, you have got to be kidding me.
I was hoping he would strike out!
Last night he wouldn’t pinch hit a right hander in a crucial situation. I think we’ll see VanMeter all year because he’s the teachers pet, lol.
And he gets an infield hit. Shelton is a genius lol.
Thought he had Castro in on the ball that could have been over the bag……
Lol, a lose, lose. He just takes AB’s away.
Shelton depriving Diego a chance to be a hero, you monster.
Off topic, but I just read about the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Texas. Makes it hard to care about the outcome of a baseball game. I have 2 grandsons and I can’t imagine losing them. Thoughts and prayers to those families
27 school shootings this year.
34 all of last year.
There is nothing more cowardly then killing children!
Those and the 1.5 million others lost to gun violence in this country in the last 50 years?
When it’s children it his me harder.
A lot of kids in that number
Yeah, and 1 is too many.
i wonder how much trade value reynolds has left
Seems like a lot of bad luck driving the early struggles, but I will also mention my priors and say I was very on board trading him for oodles if it was out there as inherently his value could never be higher than it was coming into this offseason based on contract, years of control, and results.
I would very much like if Diego or Cal were the heroes tonight.
Sooo, does Shelton hold an accountability meeting for himself on blowing this game by leaving in Underwood far too long?
Nah, he made the perfect move! He just went brain dead between innings and forgot to take Underwood out, It happens.
I mean it was an error to start the inning, otherwise he gave up one hit. His stuff was still fine. Stratton not being able to get LHP out seems to be the bigger issue there than Underwood, but even then, seems like you would blame the defense if anything.
Regardless of what happened in the inning Underwood should not have come out for a third inning this late in the game. It speaks to the fact that Shelton doesn’t trust his bullpen so he goes veteran first with a guy who isn’t really a lockdown guy in Stratton. He might as well tried Yerry to see what they got. What are they going to learn pitching Yerry in a 8-0 or 0-8 games. If he pitches bad coming in doing a blowout is he going to get the Oviedo locker treatment till they send him back or dfa him.
I know the argument could come down to pitch count vs IP, but Underwood is coming off a season with a huge workload, and an IL stint. Feels like Shelton is just throwing him straight back into the fire immediately.
Really good points especially since he led the league last year in appearances I believe. That’s just Shelton hoping to catch lightning in a bottle instead of manning up and managing the bullpen.
Or you can blame the offense for not being able to score more than one run.
Well that part is a given lol
yes sirrrr
I wouldn’t have left Underwood in for a third inning, especially after just returning from IL
It was an unearned run, so no.
Well $h&t
Great pitch sequence from Stratton!
Man, very iffy on him recently but that was great.
I don’t trust Stratton at all!
I don’t trust Shelton at all! Leaving a reliever in for a 3rd inning? I’m beginning to think he gets a bonus for losses.
Especially with a guy that just came off the IL.
Hey it’s rookie night, where’s Yerry?
Good outing, battled to get Joe but finally missed on a pitch to Blackmon. Positive either way even if Stratton can’t strand them.
Underwood out for a third inning!
One more note for Roansy tonight. 16/20 first-pitch strikes I think is a good comparison for why he’s just probably going to work out in a way Keller can’t. Roansy didn’t have great stuff or reliable secondary pitches most of the night, but he still got his fastball over and didn’t get hit hard on it. That seems to be the general issue Keller runs into in a general sense.
keller wasn’t throwing his fastball as much as last couple of outings, which confuses me.
I just don’t think he has faith in his fastball, whether because he can’t locate it enough or he just thinks it’s getting hit too much.
I dunno, I know peeps despise Underwood. But the stuff is just so insane I can’t quit him.
He’s got the stuff. Just needs to show he can be trusted.
Agree, if we can keep his arm fresh. Shelton over-used him last year. Led all relievers in appearances, maybe in innings too IIRC.
97 with movement rocks my boat
Looks good but he’s pitching against a Pirate like offense right now. I don’t know what the Rockies numbers are away from Coors but usually not good.
Early returns on Castro is he doesn’t throw accurately on the run. Most SS can.
And he doesn’t do well with back-hands in the hole. Besides this, looks like a great SS…..lol.
I see a rotation forming. Quintana, Brubaker, Thompson and Contreras. Just need that 5th guy I’m hoping Keller but I’ve lost all hope in him. Brubaker has surprised me as I thought he should have been moved to BP. If these 4 solidify themselves that let’s Crowe, peters, Stratton, bednar, and underwood to round out a decent bullpen. Now if they can just start hitting.
Brubaker seems to have had a lot of bad luck this year so far as well. I’m also out on Keller. His control just isn’t good enough. He’s also terrible in first innings and it just seems to destroy his confidence the rest of the way much of the time.
The Pirates have a DH with a SLG. of .261? That’s more surreal than a pitcher puking behind the mound
Who was that guy in Underwood’s uniform?
We need one of those monster innings where we score a couple runs.
Okay, one on. Let’s go!
Nvm *sigh*
Nice quick inning for Underwood.
Now send him to the showers so he can’t screw this up.
Block has been throwing Shelton’s name out there all night giving him credit for something I just don’t know what!
All these announcers work for the Pirates. Some are worse than others but they’re all homers and have to say positive things about the team if they want to keep working there. Telling the players they lacked effort on Sunday, if Shelton actually did that, might qualify as one of the most obvious understatements in quite a while.
I think they don’t lack effort, talent, now that they lack.
I wasn’t paying much attention, but he did say Shelton was griping at the team for what he saw as a lack of effort against the Cardinals. I usually try to block Block.
I’m pretty sure in an effort to cover his own ass he’s confusing being overmatched by a superior squad with a lack of effort.
cal!!! great to see haha. nice job taking second on the play too
Yeahhhhh!!!!!! Woooooo!!!!! I haven’t watched this much of a game all season!!!!
Love how it’s the kids coming through on both sides.
TAKE SOME HINTS, BEN!!!
If Cal’s first hit and RBI leads to Roansy’s first win, that would be something poetic.
Maybe even epic. Who knows?
Calllll!!! Yessss!!
Okay Cal, deserves that after two competitive ABs and getting unlucky in first one.
Woohoo! 1st hit and 1st RBI!
Whoo Mr. Consistency!
I have faith in Diego, gonna stick around for years to come. We should clearly only do trades with the Yankees.
We got what we all expected from Roansy. Setting the bar high. Nothing wrong with throwing FB when you can command it and dominate with it.
Welcome to the rotation, Mr. Contreras. You’re sorely needed.
Decided to get nasty in that inning. Good for Roansy.
This will be it for Roansy. If it were his 5th start I’d give hin the 6th, but 80+ in 1st start is enough.
Contreras looking really good tonight.
Money on Diego for first hit of the day for the Pirates.
Got any lotto numbers running through your head right now?
20-7-J-3000000-56-W-7
I take 10%
Lottery numbers for tomorrow please, lol.
good call
That fastball with the late move…a lot to like out of Roansy tonight.
That is all he have had today, his fastball and he gotten through 4. I’m thinking he’s done for the evening.
Wrong, imagine that! But Contreras found his breaking pitch and had perhaps his easiest inning!!!
Is he tipping his slider? Not even a check swing.
Good first at bat, not a hit but a good at bat.
hey i’ll take that. work the count full. hard hit ball. yes sir
Great, great AB
Great first AB for Cal.
