Published:

A recap of Sunday’s action for the Pittsburgh Pirates in winter ball. No leagues are in action on Monday, so I decided to post this today despite a light night of action.

In Colombia, Tsung-Che Cheng went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. He’s hitting .288/.356/.394 in 18 games. In 15 games at shortstop, he has four errors in 77 chances.

Francisco Acuna went 1-for-5 with a single. He is 5-for-24 with three walks and an RBI.

In Mexico, Randy Romero had a rough doubleheader. He went 0-for-4 in the first game, then 0-for-3 in game two. He now has a .290 average and a .690 OPS in 58 games. He is second in the league in hits, one behind the leader.

Jared Oliva went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. He’s now hitting .242 with a .663 OPS in 22 games.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
