AFL Recap: Strong Outing for Roansy Contreras

Published:

Just four games left in the Arizona Fall League season, including Tuesday night’s contest featuring the Peoria Javelinas on the road against the Mesa Solar Sox. The Pittsburgh Pirates were represented in the starting lineup by second baseman Ji-hwan Bae batting lead-off and Roansy Contreras on the mound as the starting pitcher. Here’s a recap of their day:

Bae grounded out to shortstop in the first inning. He singled on a grounder up the middle in the third. That was followed by his eighth stolen base and a run scored. In the fifth, Bae hit his first triple of the fall, lining a ball to center field. He scored a run two batters later. He flew out to left field in the seventh, then grounded into a double play to end the top of the ninth. Peoria won 5-2.

Contreras started his night with a five-pitch strikeout. The next batter flew out to center field. He got JJ Bleday, one of the best hitters in the league, to strike out on eight pitches to end the first inning. He threw 16 pitches, ten for strikes. In the second inning, Contreras struck out the first batter on three pitchers. The next man up lined a single into left field. That was followed by another single, which turned into a run after a throwing error. The next batter struck out on five pitchers, which was then followed by a six-pitch walk. The inning ended with a foul pop out to first base. He threw 29 pitches in the inning, 18 going for strikes.

In the third inning, Contreras had a very quick inning. He got a ground out, strikeout and a pop out to third base, throwing a total of nine pitches. The fourth started with a strikeout, though the final strike was an automatic one due to the batter taking too much time to get in the box. The next batter singled on a liner to center field. The next two batters both struck out, which ended the day for Contreras. He went four innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits, one walk and eight strikeouts. He threw 66 pitches, with 44 going for strikes.
