AFL Recap: Ji-hwan Bae Helps Peoria to Walk-Off Victory

Peoria was at home on Friday afternoon, taking on the Salt River Rafters. The Javelinas had a 5-8 record coming into the day. They had two Pittsburgh Pirates in the lineup, with Ji-hwan Bae batting lead-off and playing second base, while Canaan Smith-Njigba batted sixth and served as the DH. Here’s a recap of their day.

Bae struck out to start the bottom of the first. He had an RBI single in the third inning. Bae lined out back to the pitcher in the fifth inning, then lined out to center field in the eighth. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, he tied the game with an RBI double. He finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs. He’s now hitting .340 with a .929 OPS.

Smith-Njigba struck out in the second inning. He reached on an error in the fourth and stole his third base of the fall, then popped out to shortstop to end the sixth inning. Smith-Njigba walked in the ninth and scored a run. He grounded out in the tenth, but Peoria was still able to pull off the 6-5 walk-off win. He went 0-for-4 with a walk, run scored and stolen base. He’s hitting .212 with a .668 OPS.

Nick Gonzales appeared as a pinch-runner in the ninth and scored on Bae’s game-tying double. He went into the game at shortstop, but didn’t have any plays and didn’t get a chance to bat.

Peoria will be on the road tomorrow to take on Mesa at 3:35 PM EDT. They will be off on Sunday.
