The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed IF/OF Sean Rodriguez on the disabled list. To take his place on the roster, Tanner Anderson has been called up. Rodriguez has a right quad strain. The move was made retroactive to Monday.
Anderson wasn’t on the 40-man roster and the roster was full, so the Pirates moved AJ Schugel to the 60-day DL, which created an opening to add Anderson.
Anderson has a 2.34 ERA in 34.2 innings over 24 appearances with Indianapolis this season, though he allowed more runs in his debut on Opening Day in 0.2 innings, than he has since then. He’s a heavy ground ball pitcher, who works low-90s with a lot of deception and late movement, which usually results in soft contact. He was a 20th round draft pick in 2015 out of Harvard.
UPDATE: So many “Who is Tanner Anderson?” questions out there, even though he was a top 50 prospect this year and we have done features on him. Here they are, one from the Arizona Fall League and one from Altoona last year.
