Pirates Notes: Glasnow, Hutchison, and Williams Will Be Used Out of the Bullpen

PITTSBURGH — The Pirates clubhouse is filling up, with four new additions brought in from Indianapolis Tuesday.

Manager Clint Hurdle expects to use his three new pitchers — Drew Hutchison, Tyler Glasnow and Trevor Williams out of the bullpen.

Pirates Call Up Tyler Glasnow, Drew Hutchison, Trevor Williams, and Pedro Florimon

“They’re all going to start out in the bullpen,” Hurdle said. “They all started in Triple-A. There may be an opportunity for somebody down the road based on us looking at [Jameson] Taillon’s innings or Chad Kuhl’s innings. Along those lines, there could be a start with a double-header date coming up.”

It seems that all will be used as long men in the bullpen.

“It gives us an opportunity to get some guys that have pitched length and have worked off that starting rotation,” he said. “They’re all more length options. Jeff’s had to take the ball [and go with it] a couple times. Marte had to take it. It’ll be more along those lines initially coming in. Maybe late innings in a tie game if we go extended. We’ll see.”

CERVELLI UPDATE

Catcher Francisco Cervelli left the Pirates’ game Monday night after being hit in the thumb while blocking a pitch. He is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, but Hurdle said he may be available for use as a pinch hitter. Either way, the injury is not related to his hamate surgery on the same hand two months ago, a positive sing for everyone involved.

“It’s not related to the surgery, he just got smoked while blocking a ball, so we took him out and we’re checking him out right now,” Hurdle said.

FELIZ ‘POSSIBLE’ FOR RETURN

Neftali Feliz (right arm – muscular) is still unavailable out of the Pirates’ bullpen, but Hurdle said it’s “possible” that he’ll return sooner rather than later.

“They’re going to make a read today on if he can play catch,” Hurdle said. “I think there’s some hope that he’ll be back sometime this homestand.”

Feliz hasn’t pitched since leaving his appearance on Sept. 3. Hurdle did not say who would assume his usual eighth-inning duties, but Felipe Rivero is the most likely candidate.

HUGHES NOMINATED

Pirates reliever Jared Hughes was selected as the team’s nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award. Andrew McCutchen was the Pirates’ selection in 2015 and won the league-wide award, which is voted upon by the fans.
