Pirates Promote Stephen Alemais to West Virginia

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates have promoted shortstop Stephen Alemais from Morgantown to West Virginia. The move comes as a corresponding move to Power shortstop Alfredo Reyes going on the disabled list.

I got a chance to see Alemais two weeks ago in Morgantown, and his defense was fantastic. The offense was lagging behind the defense, although he’s picked up the hitting lately, with a .421/.436/.553 line in 39 plate appearances in his last nine games.

The defense was smooth enough that Alemais looks like he could play in Bradenton, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes there next year. For now, he’ll get a chance to wrap up his season in West Virginia, with the hope that he figures something out with his hitting. I wrote about what he needs to work on, and what has been holding him back in my article last week.
