Minor League Schedule: Strong Start to Season For Buddy Borden

Five games on the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league schedule today. Bradenton was rained out last night. They will make up the game today as part of a doubleheader. AAA: Indianapolis (23-16) vs Pawtucket (23-18) 11:05am
Probable starter: Adam Wilk (3-2, 4.54)

Adam Wilk will make his eighth start of the season this morning. He has given up three runs or less in six of his starts. Wilk has thrown 41.2 innings, allowing 41 hits, four homers and 13 walks. He has 29 strikeouts, an 0.96 GO/AO ratio and a .259 BAA. Wilk has a 3.33 home ERA and 6.23 on the road.

AA: Altoona (15-22) @ Binghamton (19-16) 6:35pm
Probable starter: Adrian Sampson (3-2, 2.27)

Adrian Sampson will make his eighth start of the season tonight. He has thrown 35.2 innings, giving up 32 hits, one homer and 12 walks. He has 27 strikeouts, a 1.05 GO/AO ratio and a .244 BAA. In his last start, Sampson gave up four runs on nine hits and two walks in 6.1 innings. In his first four starts combined, he allowed six walks and struck out 23 batters. In his last three starts combined, he has six walks and four strikeouts.

High-A: Bradenton (18-20) vs Lakeland (25-12) 6:30pm
Probable starter: Orlando Castro (2-2, 3.44) and Jason Creasy (2-2, 3.31)
Yesterday’s Result: Bradenton was rained out

Orlando Castro will make his seventh start of the season tonight. He has also pitched once in relief. Castro has thrown a total of 36.2 innings, allowing 36 hits, two homers and six walks. He has 25 strikeouts, a 1.62 GO/AO ratio and a .265 BAA. His last outing was four innings of relief work in which he allowed one run on four hits and a walk. In his three home starts, Castro has a 3.86 ERA in 16.1 innings. Jason Creasy will make his ninth start of the season, the first Pirates minor league pitcher to reach that mark. He has pitched 35.1 innings, giving up 34 hits, two homers and eight walks. Creasy has 22 strikeouts, a 1.16 GO/AO ratio and a .254 BAA. In his last start, he went four innings, giving up five runs(four earned) on eight hits. Creasy is holding lefties to a .211 average, while righty batters have a .310 average.

Low-A: West Virginia (13-26) @ Augusta (17-22) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Buddy Borden (0-2, 2.67)
Yesterday’s Result: West Virginia 5, Augusta 4 in 10 innings

Buddy Borden will make his eighth start of the season tonight. He has pitched 30.1 innings, allowing 23 hits, one homer and 12 walks. He has 27 strikeouts, an 0.94 GO/AO ratio and a .204 BAA. In his last start, Borden gave up three runs on four hits and three walks in 4.2 innings. He has allowed three runs in four of his starts and no runs in the other three outings. Lefties are hitting .204 against him while right-handed batters are hitting .203 in 59 at-bats.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
