The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed left-handed pitcher Mike Zagurski to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, per a team press release. Zagurski has a 6.13 ERA in 69 innings in the majors, with a 9.1 K/9 and a 5.0 BB/9 ratio. Last year he pitched 37.1 innings in the majors with Arizona, posting a 5.54 ERA, an 8.2 K/9 and a 4.6 BB/9. According to a 2007 Baseball America scouting report, Zagurski throws an 89-92 MPH fastball with good life, along with a plus slider with sharp, late-breaking action. His Pitch F/X numbers confirm the fastball, with an average velocity of 91.6 in his career. It seems that the biggest issue has been control, which could be due to the “good life” on his fastball.
