The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed six minor league free agents, according to Baseball America. Returning to the organization are catchers Milver Reyes and Wyatt Toregas. Reyes was a coach last year, and will likely return to the same role. Toregas will probably fill the role once again as AAA depth and an emergency catcher if the Pirates happen to need a dozen catchers again this year.
The new additions to the organization are 2B Keoni De Renne, 3B Vince Harrison, OF Jason Cooper, and OF Michael Ryan. De Renne and Ryan are both north of 30 and neither played in 2011. Harrison and Cooper are also north of 30, and both played independent ball in 2011. Vince is Josh Harrison’s older brother.
My guess is that these guys were added as coaches, with the possible exception of Toregas. I’ll update this when I learn more about the players.
UPDATE 9:12 PM: I’ve just confirmed that all six players will serve as player/coaches in 2012.
Tim started Pirates Prospects in 2009 from his home in Virginia, which was 40 minutes from where Pedro Alvarez made his pro debut in Lynchburg. That year, the Lynchburg Hillcats won the Carolina League championship, and Pirates Prospects was born from Tim's reporting along the way. The site has grown over the years to include many more writers, and Tim has gone on to become a credentialed MLB reporter, producing Pirates Prospects each year, and will publish his 11th Prospect Guide this offseason. He has also served as the Pittsburgh Pirates correspondent for Baseball America since 2019. Behind the scenes, Tim is an avid music lover, and most of the money he gets paid to run this site goes to vinyl records.
