Minor League Schedule: 7/18/11

All three rookie league teams are in first place. No starter has been announced yet for Indianapolis. We will update the schedule when a starter is named. ** UPDATE: Brian Burres (3-8 4.19) is starting for Indy tonight. Altoona is also being delayed by rain**

AAA: Indianapolis (48-48) VS Charlotte (48-48) 7:05pm
Probable starter: (TBD)

Indy is in 3rd place in their division, 13.5 games behind 1st place Columbus. They begin a 4 game series tonight with Charlotte.

AA: Altoona (39-54) VS Akron (49-46) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Jeff Locke (5-8 4.67)

Jeff will get his 18th start of the year tonight. He is 2nd on Altoona in innings pitched(94.1) to Aaron Pribanic and his 92 strikeouts leads the team. He has a 4.67 ERA in his last 10 games which matches his ERA in his first 8 games of the season. He gave up 4 runs in 5.2 IP in his last start and he pitched his only game in relief this year vs Akron on July 4th when he gave up 6 earned runs in 5 innings of work.

High-A: Bradenton (43-51 overall 13-11 2nd half) VS Dayton (50-42 overall 11-11 2nd half) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Brandon Cumpton (1-0 4.71)

Brandon will be making his 4th start with Bradenton, and his 16th overall start including his stint with West Virginia to start the year. On the year he has a 8-4 4.40 record in 88 innings. Cumpton has allowed 29 hits in 21 innings of work with Bradenton after allowing just 60 hits in 67 innings with WV. He gave up 4 runs in 5 innings in his last start on Wednesday.

Low-A: West Virginia (43-49 overall 8-16 2nd half) VS Charleston (37-57 overall 11-13 2nd half) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Zac Fuesser (2-3 2.42)

Zac will get his 7th start of the season tonight, he has also made 15 relief appearances. As a starter he has a 0-2 3.19 record in 31 innings. His last start was his worst,on Wednesday he allowed 5 runs in 5 IP. His previous start was his best as he pitched 6 shutout innings with 8 strikeouts. On the year he has 66 strikeouts in 67 total innings.

Short Season A: State College (8-22) VS Williamsport (16-14) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Jordan Cooper (0-2 9.53)

Cooper, the 2011 23rd round pick is making his 3rd pro start tonight. He fared much better in his 2nd game than he did in his first. He followed up a 2.2 inning performance in which he allowed 5 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks, with just one earned run allowed in 3 innings of work with his first 3 career strikeouts on Wednesday.

Rookie: GCL Pirates (16-8) VS GCL Braves (11-13) 12:00pm

The GCL Pirates are in 1st place, one game ahead of the Yankees.

VSL: VSL Pirates (31-22) VS VSL Phillies (23-29) 11:00am

The VSL Pirates are in first place and have a 1/2 game lead over the 2nd place Rays.

DSL: DSL Pirates (26-15) VS DSL Yankees2 (19-24) 10:30am

The DSL Pirates are in 1st place, 1 1/2 games ahead of the DSL Royals

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
