Minor League Schedule: 7/15/11

With the callup of Joe Beimel, the Pirates currently have Pedro Alvarez, Jose Tabata, Ross Ohlendorf, Steven Pearce and Jason Jaramillo on rehab assignments among players on their 40 man roster.

Taillon is coming off the worst start of his career

AAA: Indianapolis (48-45) @ Columbus (58-34) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Brad Lincoln (7-7 3.91)

Lincoln will get his 16th start with Indy tonight, he also made one start with the Pirates. In his last start he gave up just one run in 7 innings on three hits, one walk and he struck out eight. He last started against Columbus on May 13th and pitched 7 innings allowing two runs and getting the win. In his last 10 starts Brad has 6-4 2.84 record. He leads the team with 80 strikeouts.

AA: Altoona (37-53) @ Erie (44-47) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Kyle McPherson (2-3 3.58)

Kyle is getting his 7th start with Altoona tonight. On the year between Bradenton and the Curve he has made 18 starts and has a 6-4 3.11 record. He has pitched a total of 104.1 innings allowing 95 hits, 16 walks and he has struck out 91. In his last start Kyle went 6 innings and allowed 4 runs on 10 hits, both of those numbers are his highest totals since being promoted.

High-A: Bradenton (42-49 overall 12-9 2nd half) @ Dunedin (49-41 overall 10-10 2nd half) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Jhonathan Ramos (0-3 3.19)

Ramos will be making his first start of this season after pitching only in relief during his first 22 appearances which covered 47.2 innings pitched. Ramos pitched two years in the VSL and started all 27 games he pitched. Since being promoted to the states in 2009 he has made 6 starts, four with the GCL team in 2009 and two last year with West Virginia. He has a 2.38 ERA on the road this year in 11 appearances.

Low-A: West Virginia (41-48 overall 6-15 2nd half) VS Hickory (54-35 overall 14-7 2nd half) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Jameson Taillon (2-2 3.66)

Jameson will make his 14th start of the year tonight and he is coming off his worst pro start. On July 9th he lasted just 2.1 IP allowing 7 runs, six of them earned, on 6 hits and 2 walks. Jameson also walked two batters in his previous start after walking just four hitters in his first 11 appearances. He has 49 strikeouts in 51.2 innings.

Short Season A: State College (7-20) @ Staten Island (21-4) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Michael Jefferson (1-1 6.48)

State College is in last place in their division, nine games behind Mahoning Valley and Jamestown who are tied for first place at 16-11. Only one team in the NYPL has a worse record than State College (Aberdeen 6-20) while today’s opponent, Staten Island, has the best record in the league.

Rookie: GCL Pirates (14-8) VS GCL (9-12) 12:00pm

The GCL Pirates are in 1st place, one game ahead of the Phillies and Yankees. Luis Heredia could make his 5th start of his career today. He is 0-1 4.00 with just 3 hits allowed in 9 innings pitched.

VSL: VSL Pirates (31-20) VS VSL Rays (28-22) 11:00am

The VSL Pirates are in first place and have a 2 1/2 game lead over the 2nd place Rays.

DSL: DSL Pirates (25-13) VS DSL Red Sox (23-16) 10:30am

The DSL Pirates are in 1st place, 2 1/2 games ahead of the DSL Red Sox.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
