Minor League Schedule: 6/23/11

They resume play today with a three game series in Hickory. Altoona was rained out last night. They play a doubleheader today. The DSL Pirates have off today while the VSL team matches up against the Mariners team, the two best teams in each of the last 2 years.

West Virginia has yet to announce their post All-Star game rotation which may include Zac Fuesser who was the scheduled pitcher for their last game before the break, which was rained out. Zack Dodson is also due back sometime soon so he could be back in the rotation as well at some point.

Hafner pitched four shutout innings his first start

Ryan Hafner will get his 2nd start of the season for State College tonight. He threw four scoreless innings on Saturday allowing just three hits, walking none and striking out two. The 6′ 6″ righty is just 19 years old and was drafted in the 17th round last year, signing for $450k in August. He pitched 2 innings over 2 games last year in the Gulf Coast League.

Brett Lorin makes his first start since June 10th when he went 5 innings, giving up 3 unearned runs. He has made 8 starts this year going 1-3 3.68 over 36.2 innings. In 5 relief appearances this year he allowed just 2 runs in 17.2 IP. Overall the FSL All-Star has walked just 10 batters in 54.1 innings while striking out almost a batter per IP with 53.  In his last 10 games Brett has posted a 1.87 ERA.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
