Minor League Schedule: 6/11/11

I will be covering game three of the West Virginia- Lakewood series for the site tonight with Colton Cain on the mound and I’ll be posting a recap shortly after the completion of the game.  Brett Sinkbeil will be taking the rotation spot of Kyle McPherson (who made his AA debut last night) for the time being in Bradenton.

AAA: Indianapolis (31-32) VS Gwinnett (33-28) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Brian Burres (2-6 3.86)

Game notes: Rudy Owens got the win in a shaky start. He threw 99 pitches in just 5 innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks while striking out four. Chase d’Arnaud went 4-5 with a home run, his 4th, and he drove in five runs while stealing his 13th base. John Bowker, Alex Presley, Gorkys Hernandez and Eric Fryer all added 2 hits while Presley also had 2 outfield assists.

AA: Altoona (30-30) @ Reading (33-27) 6:35pm
Probable starter: Aaron Pribanic (5-3 2.81)

Game notes: Kyle McPherson took a loss in his AA debut going 5.2 IP allowing three runs on seven hits, two of them home runs. He walked none and struck out four. Tim Alderson pitched a scoreless 8th inning. Altoona had just 4 hits all night, Starling Marte went 2-4, Matt Curry went 1-2,double and 2 walks. Quincy Latimore went 1-4 with an outfield assist and Jordy Mercer drew 2 walks.

High-A: Bradenton (25-36) VS Ft Myers (31-30) 7:00pm
Probable starter: Brett Sinkbeil (0-2 5.00)

Game notes: Brett Lorin pitched 5 innings giving up three runs but none of them were earned. He gave up 5 hits, walked one and struck out three. Elevys Gonzalez went 2-4 with a double and Robbie Grossman went 1-3 with a walk. Jarek Cunningham played his first game since June 5th but went 0-4 with 2 errors in the field.

Low-A: West Virginia (30-29) @ Lakewood (28-32) 7:05pm
Probable starter: Colton Cain (4-5 3.38)

VSL: VSL Pirates (12-9) VS VSL Mariners (14-9) 9:30am

Games notes: Starter Andy Otamendi pitched 4 IP giving up one run on 4 hits while striking out four. Kelly Aponte had a 2 run double, he now has 17 RBI’s on the year. Dilson Herrera went 1-4 with a stolen base. Jose Roman went 1-3 and is now hitting .359 on the year.

DSL: DSL Pirates (6-2) VS DSL Dodgers (2-7) 10:30am

Game notes: Christian Henriquez pitched 3 scoreless innings allowing just a single as the Pirates won 7-6 in 11 innings. Edwin Espinal went 1-4 with a walk and 2 RBI’s, he now has 12 RBI’s in just seven games. Ramses Pena went 2-4 and Danny Arribas caught his first game going 0-2.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
