Game 74: Cahill, Barton Add to Bucco Woes

Published:

I think it will be a matter of time before this team is no-hit. It was close as the Pirates had just one hit through sevena and finished with only two as Trevor Cahill was sharp and Daric Barton hit three doubles to support him.

Barton got going early. His first inning double off of Daniel McCutchen scored Coco Crips. In the second with two gone Barton doubled again, this one plated Crisp and Jack Cust. Justin Thomas was on in the seventh when Barton doubled again and again knocked in Crisp.

In the meantime, Cahill did not allowe the Pirates to advance a runner past second. Jose Tabata had the lone hit until the 8th when Cahill was pulled with two outs with runners on first and second. Craig Breslow got Andy LaRoche to retire the side. Andrew Bailey pitched the 9th.

Cahill struck out 10 in his 7-2/3 and walked three. McCutchen was so-so. He gave up four runs in six innings on seven hits. He struck out two and walked two.

The Good
Pirates and A’s wore throw back unis with Oakland opting to have the coaching staff wear the white caps just like Dick Williams used to do. Bucs wore the solid black unis that they frequently wore in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Plus the ugly hats.

The Bad
Everybody the Pirates play is really hot or else the Pirates really stink.

Bucs have lost 16 straight on the road

The Rest
In his last 8 starts, Cahill is 6-0 with a 2.24 ERA.

This was McCutchen’s first ever inter-league appearance.

This was Barton’s second career 4 RBI game. No member of the A’s while they have been in Oakland has had more than three doubles in a game.

Jose Tabata has a hit in 13 of his 15 career games.
