The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired right handed pitcher Doug Mathis from the Marlins for a PTBNL or cash. Mathis has spent parts of three seasons in the majors, combining for a 4.84 ERA in 87.1 innings, with a 4.5 K/9 and a 3.6 BB/9. His last season in the majors was in 2010 at the age of 27. This year he has been pitching in Triple-A, with a 3.85 ERA in 114.2 innings, along with a 6.7 K/9 and a 4.2 BB/9.
The Pirates will most likely be raiding the Indianapolis roster on September 1st when the major league rosters expand. They’ve been adding a few minor players, such as Robert Andino and Kyle Farnsworth, in preparation for those moves. Indianapolis will be going to the playoffs, so they will need replacements once pitchers like Vic Black, Duke Welker, and everyone else on the 40-man roster are called up. Mathis is another guy who will fill in for Indianapolis in the playoffs after the 40-man guys get called up.
