Rounds 36-40: Pirates Wrap Up the 2013 Draft

Published:

2013 draftThe Pirates wrapped up day three of the MLB draft with several JuCo players, and finished up with a pair of pitchers. The reports for each player can be seen below, with their names linked to their Pirates Prospects player pages.

36th Round, 1079th Overall: Scott Hoffman, RHP, South Mountain CC

Hoffman was originally drafted by the New York Yankees in the 29th round of the 2011 draft out of High School. He chose not to sign and went to South Mountain Community College, where he pitched just one game during the 2012 season. He is currently pitching in the Jayhawk Summer Baseball League in Kansas. Hoffman has also played infield. Hoffman put up good stats in 2013 splitting his time between starting and relief. He is tough to hit and he fits the Pirates recent draft mold of 6’4″ right-handed pitchers. – John Dreker

37th Round, 1109th Overall: Andrew Dennis, C, Wallace State CC

Dennis has a commitment to UAB for the 2014 season. He signed the Letter of Intent in late 2012, and isn’t currently on the Wallace State roster. 2013 stats also couldn’t be found for him, so it’s assumed he didn’t play in 2013. Dennis has some power potential, and moves well behind the plate. He pitched two innings in 2012, showing off his strong arm. Due to the commitment to UAB, he seems unlikely to sign. – Tim Williams

38th Round, 1139th Overall: Luke Voirdon, C, Delgado College

He comes from Jesuit HS and spent these last two seasons at Delgado College, two programs that pump out winning teams. During his first season at Delgado College, he threw out 25 of 43 attempted base stealers. His hitting really picked up in his second season, catching up to the defense. He also pitched some in HS when he wasn’t behind the plate, but catching has been his natural position all though HS and College. Voiron has a commitment to go to North Carolina State, so it may take a little more to sign him away from a major college. – John Dreker

39th Round, 1169th Overall: Jacob Smigelski, RHP, UC Riverside

Smigelski started his career in 2011 with Loyola Marymount, then transferred to UC Riverside after one season. He missed some time in 2013 with a forearm injury. Smigelski hasn’t pitched much in his career, combining for 47.2 innings. He has also been hit pretty hard in those innings, so the Pirates must see something they like about his stuff. Reports were hard to find on him, so no word on what kind of stuff he has. – Tim Williams

40th Round, 1199th Overall: Bryan Baker, RHP, Choctawhatchee HS (FL)

Baker is a big, hard-throwing kid, who also starred at basketball in High School. He is a bit raw on the mound as the two seasons overlap, but he already touches 93 MPH and can sit 90 at times. He needs to work on both of his secondary pitches, a curve and changeup, plus he doesn’t have the cleanest delivery. He is a very athletic kid though, so once he concentrates on baseball full-time, he could really take off. He has a college commitment to North Florida. – John Dreker
