According to Cory Giger, the Pittsburgh Pirates have promoted catcher Tony Sanchez to Triple-A, following a 1-for-4 performance tonight for Altoona. Sanchez had a .277/.373/.387 line coming in to today’s game, and hit his 14th double of the year with his only hit.
The catcher struggled in April, hitting for a .259 average and a .718 OPS. He rebounded a bit in May, with a .289 average and a .795 OPS, mostly fueled by a strong run at the end of the month. In his last ten games, Sanchez has gone 12-for-33 (.364) with six doubles.
Sanchez was in his second year in Double-A, and was drafted out of college. That means we’ll get a better idea of his hitting potential once he moves up to Triple-A.
