Baseball America released their top 20 prospects for the 2011 Gulf Coast League today (scouting reports for subscribers). The Pittsburgh Pirates had three players on the list, including two in the top five.
Luis Heredia led the trio, ranked as the number three prospect in the league. That’s quite an accomplishment for the youngest player in the league, as Heredia didn’t turn 17 until mid-August.
Jose Osuna was the number five prospect in the league, and the second Pirates prospect to make the list. Osuna had a surprising year in his jump to the US, with a .331/.400/.511 line in 178 at-bats.
Alen Hanson was the third player on the list, raking 14th overall. Hanson had a .263/.352/.429 line in 198 at-bats, including a league leading seven triples.
Only the Yankees and Pirates had more than two players on the top 20 list, with each team having three. The Yankees had the top two prospects, and the two teams combined to make up four of the top five spots.
