The Pittsburgh Pirates made one more cut on Tuesday morning, after going through two rounds of cuts on Monday. Right-handed pitcher Nick Mears has been reassigned to minor league camp.
Mears had a bit of a rough spring in his very brief time on the mound. In five appearances, he allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks, in four innings. However, he ended his time well yesterday by retiring all three batters he faced after inheriting a bases loaded jam with no outs in the fourth inning.
Mears began the 2019 season in Low-A with Greensboro and ended up in Altoona, with a trip to the Arizona Fall League in September, so he made a lot of progress in one year. He impressed enough during the season to earn a spot among the top 20 prospects in the system in our 2020 Prospect Guide. He should begin this season with Altoona, and should see Indianapolis at some point this summer.
Our Spring Training tracker has been updated. The Pirates have 47 healthy players in camp, with 16 days left until Opening Day.
