Morris Wins For Curve, Cain Debuts

St. �Lucie Mets �3, �Bradenton Marauders �2 � (11 innings) (box)

A single, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI single brought in the runner from second base to score the go-ahead run for the Mets off reliever Mike Colla in the top of the 11th. �The Marauders had scored their 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, on a 2-run homer by DH�Eric Fryer, following a walk by SS Greg Picart. The Marauders managed only 3 more hits after that, though the Mets’ pitchers gave up a total of 9 walks. �2B Jose De Los Santos singled in the 2nd, and 1B Calvin Anderson singled in the 3rd. �Picart also reached base on a fielding error in the 4th, and LF Quincy Latimore was hit by a pitch in the 5th. �Pinch-hitter/C Milver Reyes singled in the top of the 11th, but could not get any further than first. �The Marauders left a total of 11 runners on base.

Starter Jeff Locke scattered 8 hits over hist 5.2 innings of work. �He gave up a run in the 3rd inning on a single and a triple, then another run in the 6th on a single and a ground-rule double, tying the game. �Tom Boleska finished the 6th for Locke with a strikeout, then got three straight ground outs to make quick work of the 7th inning. �Tyler Cox pitched 3 scoreless innings, allowing only one single. �Mike Colla came on to begin the 11th, and he was charged with the loss.

Batavia Muckdogs �12 �State College Spikes �3 (box)

The Muckdogs kept up a stead barrage against the Spikes pitchers, scoring in every inning but the 1st and 9th. �They were aided by 7 errors by the Spikes. �Zack Von Rosenberg made the start and went 4 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits. �The run in the 2nd was unearned, coming on a double and a throwing error. �A double, a single, and a sacrifice fly brought in a run in the 3rd and a double and a single scored the run in the 4th. �Mitch Fienemann allowed a run in the 5th, on a walk and two singles. �The 6th brought in 4 unearned runs for Batavia. �A walk and two singles, combined with three errors did the damage. �Jarryd Sullivan was next, giving up a run in the 7th on a double and a single. �Three more runs scored in the 8th, on two walks, a single, a sacrifice fly, and another error. �Teddy Fallon was the only Spikes pitcher to not allow a run, as he finished the 8th inning, and kept the Muckdogs scoreless despite two walks in the 9th.

The Spikes made more errors (7) than they had hits (5). �They were scoreless until the 6th, when SS Kelson Brown led off with a walk, then moved to second base on RF Adalberto Santos’ single. �DH Chase Lyles’ RBI single brought in Brown, and CF Justin Bencsko’s ground out brought in Santos. �C Jairo Marquez singled, driving in Lyles with the Spikes’ third run. �Bencsko and 1B Gerlis Rodriguez also had singles in the game.

GCL Pirates �5, �GCL Phillies �1 (box)

Colton Cain made his professional debut with 4 scoreless one-hit innings against the Phillies. �Cain had a battter reach on a fielding error in the 2st inning, but left that batter on base. �He gave up a 2-out single in the 2nd, then retired the next 7 batters in order. � He struck out 2 batters. �Trent Stevenson took over for Cain for the next 5 innings. �Stevenson allowed only two hits, but one of them, by the first batter he faced in the 5th, was a solo home run. �That was the only run the Phillies could get. �Stevenson retired the next 14 batters he faced, then gave up a triple, then got a ground out to end the game.

The Pirates got onto the scoreboard with 3 runs in the top of the 1st. �2B Jorge Bishop led off with a single, then stole base, then moved to third on a throwing error on CF Junior Sosa’s ball. �RF Gregory Polanco’s double brought in both Bishop and Sosa, and a single by LF Exicardo Cayonez scored Polanco. �Two more runs came in during the 4th inning. �With two outs, back-to-back walks by SS Kevin Mort and C Dylan Child put two runners on. �A passed ball moved both of them up one base, then a wild pitch scored Mort and put Child on third base. �DH Luis Solano doubled, plating Child.
