Pirates Add George Kontos to Active Roster; Option Neverauskas to Indianapolis

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates have added right-handed pitcher George Kontos to the active roster for tonight’s game against the Detroit Tigers and optioned right-hander Dovydas Neverauskas to Indianapolis to make room.

Kontos was picked up off of waivers from the San Francisco Giants on Saturday. With the Giants, he had a 3.83 ERA and a 4.02 FIP in 51.2 innings over 50 appearances this season, with 17 walks and 55 strikeouts. He also had a 1.61 GO/AO ratio, which is well above his career average, both during his time in the minors and in the majors. The 9.6 SO/9IP ratio is the highest of his career. Over his seven seasons in the majors, he has a 3.05 ERA in 315.2 innings and a 3.72 FIP.

Neverauskas won yesterday’s thriller by throwing two shutout innings. Over three brief stints with the Pirates this year, he has pitched six times, giving up three runs over nine innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

The Pirates also announced that outfielder Danny Ortiz has cleared waivers and has been sent outright to Indianapolis.
