Andrew McCutchen has won the Roberto Clemente award, becoming the first Pirates’ player to win the award since Willie Stargell in 1974. The award is given out annually to the player who best exemplifies baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and contributes to his team.
Team owner Bob Nutting has this to say about McCutchen winning the award:
“I could not be more proud of Andrew for this well-deserved honor. He is more than a dynamic player on the field and a leader in our clubhouse; he is a person who carries himself with high character and honor every day.
“Andrew is involved in so much of what we do at Pirates Charities and in our community. However, perhaps what I appreciate the most about Andrew is in those moments that take place away from the public spotlight. To see the smile on the faces of a young group of players when they meet Andrew for the first time, or the impact made on a young child that can forget about their challenges to spend time with Andrew.
“Andrew always makes it a priority to be a positive impact in our community, the very same way that Roberto Clemente once did. Having a Pirates player recognized for carrying on Clemente’s legacy of giving back makes this extra special. Congratulations to Andrew”
