With just under four weeks until the 2015 amateur draft starts, Jonathan Mayo from MLB Pipeline gives his first mock draft and it is a name we heard on Monday for the Pittsburgh Pirates. I went over Nick Plummer’s credentials yesterday, so just quickly, the Georgia HS outfielder has an advanced bat that will allow him to hit for average and power. He has above-average speed and he currently plays center field, but some think he will end up at a corner spot.
Plummer has been ranked #19 before in draft prospect rankings and he went to the Pirates in an early season mock draft, so this isn’t someone new. He has lived up to his preseason expectations, as most have had him in the 10-20 range all year. I’ve included video of him below courtesy of Big League Futures so you can get a better look.
Mayo goes up to #26, so it doesn’t cover the Pirates’ second pick at 32nd overall. As for the players rated just after Plummer, they include a bunch of names we have covered often, starting with Arkansas outfielder Andrew Benintendi, followed immediately by UCLA pitcher James Kaprielian, Southern Nevada pitcher Phil Bickford, Cincinnati outfielder Ian Happ and last year’s first overall pick, Brady Aiken. He won’t pitch until early next season due to Tommy John surgery.
