Pirates Prospect Watch: Paul Skenes Exits Early in His Altoona Debut

Published:

ALTOONA, PA – I’m at the end of two weeks on the road, covering the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system. Last night’s Paul Skenes start was a bit of a bonus for me. I’ve got an article on the start later today. Check out the brief recap of what happened on Saturday in the system.

Player of the Day

CARTER BINS, C, ALTOONA

Bins was catching Paul Skenes after zero previous experience. He’s the best defender on the team, and handled the plus stuff that wasn’t consistently inside the zone. Offensively, Bins was the hero of the day. He had three hits, including a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth to seal a Curve comeback victory.

More to Follow

ROANSY CONTRERAS, RHP, INDIANAPOLIS

Contreras got the start last night for Indianapolis, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings of work. He allowed zero walks and struck out six. Contreras has a 2.81 ERA in 16 innings since returning to Triple-A, with a 15:6 K/BB.

NICK GONZALES, SS, INDIANAPOLIS

Gonzales homered for the eighth time this season in Triple-A. He has a .295/.427/.459 line with two homers in 61 at-bats during the month of August, since going back down to the minors.

PAUL SKENES, RHP, ALTOONA

Skenes didn’t have the best outing, but he wasn’t hit hard. He threw 12 pitches at 99, and two at 100. I’ll have details on his debut with Altoona later today on the site.

MATT GORSKI, CF, ALTOONA

Gorski continued to show tools on both sides of the ball. He homered early in the game, hit a double late in the game, and got an out with an assist from center field, throwing out a runner at second.

JOE PEREZ, RF, ALTOONA

Perez has brought power and protection to the Altoona lineup for Gorski. After Gorski doubled late in the game, Perez followed with a home run. He’s a guy who is more advanced than this level, but right now that is helping the lineup.

MATT FRAIZER, RF, ALTOONA

Fraizer has been hitting well this week, and the last two days he’s had some hard hits to the wall. He doubled to the wall in the first, and later hit an opposite field single on a 94 MPH fastball, launching it over shortstop into right field.

SEAN SULLIVAN, RHP, ALTOONA

Sullivan entered the game in the third inning, and pitched five frames. He allowed three runs on five hits, with two walks and three strikeouts. His fastball was 90-92 from an almost sidearm slot and a funky setup. He also worked a mid-80s slider and a low-80s changeup.

LONNIE WHITE JR., CF, BRADENTON

White hit his sixth homer of the year in a two hit game for Bradenton. Four of those home runs have come in the month of August. White is batting .297/.438/.625 in the month of August.

SERGIO CAMPANA, LF, BRADENTON

Campana hit two triples for Bradenton tonight. The outfielder is batting .225/.392/.350 in 40 at-bats, after being promoted from the FCL earlier this month. The Pirates signed Campana in 2009 for half a million.
