Pirates Trim Roster by One After Loss to Orioles

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates reached the midway point of Spring Training with a rough 14-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. They trimmed their Spring Training roster by five players prior to the game, then made another move afterwards, optioning Rodolfo Castro to Indianapolis. That lowers the active roster total to 47 players in big league camp, with Opening Day 11 days away now (April 7th). Rosters will be at 28 spots to open the season.

The 22-year-old Castro put in a decent amount of time with the 2021 Pirates, but he has barely played in Triple-A, and didn’t have much success in the majors, other than an early home run barrage. He finished up hitting .198/.258/.395 in 31 games for the Pirates, with 27 strikeouts in 93 plate appearances. He played just eight games with Indianapolis last year.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long.
