Tyler Glasnow Named MLB Pipeline Pitcher of the Year

Published:

On Thursday afternoon, MLB Pipeline handed out their end of the season awards and for the second time in three seasons, Tyler Glasnow was named the MLB Pipeline Pitcher of the Year. He also won the award during the 2014 season.

Between two rehab starts for Altoona and 20 starts for Indianapolis, Glasnow finished with a 1.93 ERA in 116.1 innings, with 144 strikeouts, a .176 BAA and a 1.17 WHIP. His best results were during the month of June, when despite walking 26 batters in 34 innings, he had an 0.79 ERA, an .085 BAA, and 36 strikeouts. During three of his six June starts, he threw no-hit ball, totaling 18 innings in those games. Glasnow put up those impressive numbers this season while making two Major League starts and spending five weeks on the disabled list.

When he first won the award back in 2014 while with Bradenton, he had a 1.74 ERA in 124.1 innings, with 157 strikeouts, a 1.05 WHIP and a .174 BAA, so his stats were slightly better across the board that year. Glasnow has thrown exactly 500 minor league innings during his pro career, posting a 2.03 ERA, with 645 strikeouts, a .172 BAA and a 1.09 WHIP.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects.
