Split Squad: Pirates vs. Netherlands; Pirates vs. Phillies

Good afternoon from Al Lang Stadium in St. Pete, Fla.  I had trouble finding parking around the stadium when I arrived this morning, but just recently found out why. A lot of the streets are blocked off or one way and there was odd tracks set up. Apparently there is an INDYCAR race that takes place around the stadium and around downtown St. Pete next weekend.

  • The Pirates have a split squad today. I’m currently in St. Pete covering the Pirates vs. Netherlands game for the International League tournament. The game will start at 1:05 and right-hander Jeff Karstens will get the start.
  • Here’s the Pirates lineup vs. Netherlands:

Robbie Grossman 8

Josh Harrison 6

Jeff Clement 3

Nick Evans 5

Brandon Boggs 9

Jake Fox 7

Anderson Hernandez 4

Michael McKenry 2

Jeff Karstens 1

  • Extras: Ramon Cabrera; and from minor league camp: Evan Chambers, Quincy Latimore, Miles Durham, Brock Holt, Jarek Cunningham, Matt Curry and Jeremy Farrell.
  • Following Karstens in relief are lefties Rudy Owens and Jeff Locke and right-hander Daniel McCutchen.
  • Extra arms from minor league camp: Brian Tallet, Jose Diaz and Michael Dubee.
  • The Pirates will be facing the Philadelphia Phillies at McKechnie Field today also at 1:05. Right-hander Charlie Morton will start for the Pirates against righty Vance Worley.
  • Following Morton in relief are: Juan Cruz, Chris Resop, Ryota Igarashi, Tim Wood, Daniel Cabrera and Shairon Martis.
  • Right-handers Brad Lincoln (right calf tightness) and Kyle McPherson (dead arm like symptoms) were scratched from their outings today. They are both day-to-day.
  • Pirates lineup vs. Phillies:

  • I’ll have recaps from both up later on the main site.
  • There are a few new features added to the site I wanted to make sure you guys were aware of. Me and Tim will be having weekly chats. Tim’s Minor League chat will take place on Mondays, I will have the Major League club chat on Wednesday. More info here.
  • We are also adding daily notebooks to the main page. So for a better idea of what kind of coverage you can expect, I’ll have a daily feature story that should be up around 11 AM. Pirates recaps, as well as breaking news stories will post throughout the day. The notebooks will post around 11 PM at night. And as always, I’ll be posting random news and notes on the blogs as well.
