WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Basil was an older international signing for the Pirates; he was a few months short of 21 when he signed. He has good size and throws in the mid-90s with a slider. He’s shown some ability to miss bats.
2018 The Pirates used Basil as a starter in his debut, except for two games in relief. He had a good K rate, but allowed more baserunners than you’d like to see. Basil pitched very well in June, with an ERA of 1.11. He struggled in July, with a 7.31 ERA, then pitched only once in August. 2019 Considering his age, Basil seemed like a candidate to go to Bristol, but the Pirates sent him to the GCL, where he pitched out of the bullpen. Opponents batted only .205 against him and he struck out a lot of hitters, but control issues hampered him. Basil’s 2020 assignment will probably depend on how much progress he makes with his control before the short season teams start play. By then he’ll be 23. |
