WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
The A’s signed Ramos for $300K, which at the time was the largest bonus they could pay due to sanctions for exceeding their bonus pool.  He’s all about projection.  When the Pirates acquired him, he threw in the mid- to upper-80s, with a curve and slider.  The slider was the better of his secondary pitches.  He throws from a low, 3/4 angle.  By 2022, the projection was showing up, at least in terms of velocity, as he was up to 95-97 mph.

2018
DSL:  3-3-0, 3.15 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 40.0 IP, 3.8 BB/9, 8.6 K/9

In his debut, Ramos put up solid numbers, including a fairly good K rate and a slightly high walk rate.  He started eight games and relieved in another six.

2019
R:  0-2-0, 6.39 ERA, 1.90 WHIP, 12.2 IP, 7.1 BB/9, 5.7 K/9

Ramos was hampered by a sore elbow in the GCL.  He made three starts early in the season, then was out until early August.  He made one start then and didn’t pitch again.  When he did pitch, it obviously didn’t go well, as he got hit hard and had control problems.  It’s possible he was affected by the elbow problem.

2020
DNP

2021
R:  2-1-1, 3.69 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, 39.0 IP, 3.9 BB/9, 8.3 K/9

Back in the FCL, Ramos pitched in a swing role.  His walk and K rates were much-improved, but opponents batted .292 against him.

2022
A:  4-1-3, 3.88 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, 51.0 IP, 5.6 BB/9, 10.2 K/9

Ramos spent the season in Bradenton, mostly pitching in long relief.  He made some progress, including ramped-up velocity.  After allowing 15 earned runs in 11.1 IP in May and June, he gave up just seven over 28 innings over the last three months.  His main problems overall were walks and left-handed hitters, who torched him for a 333/474/533 line.

Ramos remains an interesting pitcher, although he’s in his third year of Rule 5 eligibility.
