Pirates Take Final Warm-Up

Pirates  4,  Phillies  1

The Pirates appreciated the warmer temperatures this afternoon -- warmer than last night, anyway.  They held the Phillies to just 2 hits, and starter Charlie Morton gave up only one unearned run in 5 innings, as they won the second of two pre-season games in Philadelphia.

A throwing error by 3B Pedro Alvarez put the first Phillies' batter on base in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  Two ground outs moved the runner to third, then brought him in.  Morton worked around a single and a walk in the 1st and another walk in the 3rd.  He made an error in the 5th, when he missed the catch on a toss from 1B Steve Pearce, but worked around that too.  When Morton was done, Mike Crotta and Chris Resop each pitched a perfect inning.  Joel Hanrahan pitched the 8th and allowed a two-out triple, but left the runner standing on third.  Jared Hughes pitched a scoreless 9th, with a walk.

The Pirates scored two in the top of the 2nd, when 1B Lyle Overbay doubled, then Alvarez blasted a home run over the right center field wall.  Steve Pearce doubled to lead off the 6th.  He moved to second on a ground out, then scored on 3B Jordy Mercer's RBI single.  The Pirates added an insurance run in the 9th.  SS Josh Rodriguez singled, then pinch-hitter Josh Harrison moved him to third with another single.  LF John Bowker drove in Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly.

2B Brian Friday also singled in the game, and CF Starling Marte got into the game as well.

The Indy Indians were scheduled to play the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in Bradenton this afternoon.

Indians Top Yankees; Pirates’ Top Red Sox

Indianapolis Indians  7,  Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees  2
The Indians had both the pitching and the hitting tuned up this afternoon as they defeated the Yankees at Bradenton.   SS Jordy Mercer, 2B Josh Harrison, and C Eric Fryer each drove in two runs.   The scoring started when Harrison tripled in the 3rd inning, when 3 runs came in. Mercer blasted a solo homer, then Fryer's 2-run double was the gem of the 8th inning, as 3 more runs scored.  Starter Justin Wilson pitched 3 scoreless innings, with 4 strikeouts, to earn the win.  The Yankees scored their 2 runs in the 5th, with reliever Jared Hughes on the mound.  Hughes pitched 2 innings and also struck out 3 batters.  Tony Watson pitched 2 scoreless innings (3 K), and Anthony Claggett (2 K) and Ramon Aguero each pitched a scoreless frame.

Pirates  7,  Red Sox  5
A 5-run 4th inning put the Pirates well on their way to a win this afternoon at Bradenton.  The rally began when 2B Neil Walker reached base on a fielding error and CF Andrew McCutchen walked.   1B Lyle Overbay lifted a double into left field, which brought in both Walker and McCutchen.  3B Pedro Alvarez grounded to third, where Overbay was out, leaving Alvarez on first.  RF Matt Diaz lined a single up the middle, and C Dusty Brown loaded the bases on an infield grounder that bounced off Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett.  With two outs, Pirates' starter Kevin Correia slipped a grounder into left field, driving in Alvarez and Diaz.   When the throw in to the plate was not in time to get Diaz, the Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia tried to throw back to third to surprise Brown.  The real surprise was when Saltalamacchia's throw sailed into left field, allowing Brown to score and Correia to move up to third.  LF John Bowker gave the Pirates 2 more insurance runs with a homer in the 7th inning.  Correia also singled in the 3rd inning but was out in a force play at second.

2B Pedro Ciriaco doubled after Bowker's homer in the 7th.   CF Corey Wimberly, RF Josh Fields, and SS Josh Rodriguez got into the game.  Steve Pearce played a few innings at third base as well.

Correia pitched 5 innings in his start.  He gave up two singles in the top of the 1st and one in the 2nd, but double plays got him out of both innings.  He zipped through the 3rd and 4th innings, then gave up 3 runs in the 5th.  A walk, a single, and a sacrifice fly brought in the first run.  Two more singles added a second run, then a throwing error by Walker at second and a sacrifice fly added an unearned run.  Joel Hanrahan pitched a scoreless 6th, with 2 strikeouts.  Then Justin Thomas allowed a run to score in the 7th on a run, a double, and a wild pitch.  Fernando Nieve pitched the final two innings and earned the save even though he gave up a run on a double, a walk, and a single in the 9th.

Altoona Curve Win Eastern League Championship

Altoona Curve 5, Trenton Thunder 2 ... (box)

IMG_4068The Altoona Curve clinched the Eastern League Championship tonight, defeating the Trenton Thunder in Game 4 of the championship series in Trenton. Starter Tony Watson, who was also the winning pitcher a week ago when the Curve won the divisional series, earned the win again tonight. Closer Daniel Moskos (photo, while with the Indy Indians), earned his 5th save of the playoffs. He had a save in each of the Curve's three wins in the championship series, and also in two of their three wins in the divisional series. The offensive star of the game was DH Jim Negrych, who went 3-for-5 and led the way with 3 RBI.

Watson pitched 6 innings and struck out 10 Thunder batters. He gave up 2 runs on only 5 hits and 2 walks. The Thunder began the bottom of the 1st with a single off the bat of CF Austin Krum, who also stole second base. After two strikeouts, Watson walked C Austin Romine, but then struck out the next batter, leaving the two runners on base.

Watson gave up two hits and a run in the 3rd. 2B Matthew Cusick led off with a triple into right field. Two outs later, he scored on RF Daniel Brewer's line drive single into right field, and the Thunder had a 1-0 lead.

.

IMG_3661The Curve had put one runner on base in the 1st, when 3B Josh Harrison reached base on an error, then stole second base. In the 2nd, Negrych hit a 2-out single up the middle, then CF Jose De Los Santos walked, but all three of them were left on base. When the Thunder made another fielding error in the 4th, the Curve were able to capitalize. 1B Matt Hague led off with a walk, then a fielding error by the Thunder first baseman put LF Andrew Lambo on first and Hague on third. That brought up the offensive hero, Jim Negrych (photo, with the Indy Indians). Negrych slapped a grounder into left field for a 2-RBI single, bringing in both Hague and Lambo to give the Curve a 2-1 lead.

The Curve rallied again, with help from Negrych, in the 5th. Harrison led off with a line drive into center field, and he moved to second base on SS Jordy Mercer's ground out. Hague lifted a single into right field, and Harrison raced around from second. When the throw in from the outfield ticked off the catcher Romine's glove, Harrison scored and Hague advanced to second base. Hague moved up to third base on Lambo's ground out. The Thunder intentionally walked C Hector Gimenez, and Negrych again came to the plate with a runner in scoring position. Negrych lined into left field, with the Trenton LF Damon Sublett giving chase. Sublett went for the sliding catch -- and missed. As the ball went on behind Sublett, Negrych was safely into second base with a double, and Hague scored, giving the Curve a 4-1 lead.

Curve Hold Their Own Against Pettitte, But Lose Game One

Trenton Thunder 3, Altoona Curve 2 ... (box)

Curve starter Rudy Owens faced off against National's phenom pitcher Stephen Strasbourg at the beginning of the season, and held his own. Now he winds down the season by facing off against New York Yankees' rehabbing star Andy Pettitte -- and again, Owens held his own. Owens and Pettitte each pitched 5 innings in tonight's first game of the Eastern League Championship Series, held in Altoona. Owens gave up 2 runs; Pettitte gave up 2 runs. Owens gave up 7 hits and 3 walks; Pettitte gave up 6 hits and 2 walks, and he also threw a wild pitch. Owens struck out 7; Pettitte struck out 4.

2B Chase d'Arnaud faced Pettitte three times and must not have been very impressed. He put the first run of the game onto the scoreboard when he led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a solo home run off Pettitte. In the 3rd inning, d'Arnaud worked a walk, and in the 5th, he singled off Pettitte.

The Curve took d'Arnaud's home run lead into the 3rd inning. Rudy Owens gave up a walk and a single in the 2nd, but induced a double play to end the inning. In the 3rd, he gave up three singles, including the RBI single that slipped past first base and down the right field line to tie the score at 1-1.

The Curve came right back in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 2-1 lead. With one out, DH Yung Chi Chen lined a single into right field. Pettitte's wild pitch put Chen on second base, and when d'Arnaud walked, ball four got past the Trenton catcher for a passed ball, allowing Chen to advance to third base. 3B Josh Harrison grounded just out of reach of the Trenton shortstop and into left field for the single that scored Chen.

Owens retired the side in order again in the 4th. Then he gave up two doubles in the top of the 5th, and Trenton had tied up the game again, at 2-2.

The Curve threatened in the bottom of the 5th. Chen reached base on a fielding error by the Trenton third baseman. Back-to-back singles by d'Arnaud and Harrison -- a line drive into right field by d'Arnaud and a bunt single by Harrison -- loaded the bases for Altoona. But Pettitte got SS Jordy Mercer to bounce back to the mound, where he fired the ball back to the catcher, forcing out Chen at the plate, then on to first base to complete the double play. A strikeout ended the inning.

Curve and Marauders Both Fall To Big Innings

Harrisburg Senators 10, Altoona Curve 5 .... (box)

Two 5-run innings gave the Senators the advantage over the Curve in the first game of their Eastern League playoff series.

The Curve jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the 1st. 2B Chase d'Arnaud led off with a walk, and 3B Josh Harrison followed by blasting a home run over the left-center field wall, to give the Curve a 2-0 lead before they even had recorded an out. Two outs later, LF Andrew Lambo reached base on a fielding error by the Senators' 2B Steve Lombardozzi. C Hector Gimenez worked a walk, and RF Miles Durham singled into left field to bring in Lambo from second base, and the Curve had a 3-0 lead.

It didn't last long, as the Senators sent 10 batters to the plate and scored 5 runs in the top of the 2nd. Curve starter Rudy Owens had worked around a walk to Lombardozzi in the 1st inning, but got into trouble quickly in the 2nd. A walk and a single began the inning, then a grounder to the diving 1B Matt Hague produced a force out at second base. A double into right-center field brought in both base runners, and the Senators had made it a one-run game, 3-2. A bunt attempt by the Senators' pitcher, Tom Milone, went right to Owens on the mound, and he turned it into a fielder's choice out at third, leaving Milone on first base. But Lombardozzi walked again, then a single loaded the bases. Owens had two outs with those bases loaded, and he got an 0-2 on the next batter -- and another single drove in two more runs, and the Senators had the lead. That sent Owens to the showers after just 1.2 innings. Jared Hughes came out of the bullpen, and he loaded the bases again by walking the first batter he faced. A passed ball by Gimenez allowed the runner in from third base (unearned run, charged to Owens), and when a ground out ended the inning, the Senators had a 5-3 lead.

Milone had the Curve bats under control for the next 6 innings. D'Arnaud doubled in the 2nd inning, but was left on base when three other Curve batters struck out. Hughes reached base in the 4th on a fielding error, but was also left stranded. Durham singled in the 6th, but was also left on base. Harrisburg's reliever Hassan Pena pitched the 7th inning, and he also retired the Curve in order.

Hughes did even better than Milone over his next 3 innings -- he retired those 9 Harrisburg batters in order. Bryan Morris was next out of the bullpen. He retired the side in order in the 6th, and worked his way out of a jam in the 7th. That inning began with a single, then Lombardozzi reached on fielding error, when his grounder bounced off 3B Harrison's glove. With two on and none out (instead of one on and one out), Morris got a strikeout. Another single loaded the bases, then Morris ended the inning with a three-pitch strikeout and a blazing line drive that went straight to Harrison's glove.

Mike Dubee took the mound for the Curve to begin the 8th inning, and he found trouble quickly. Back-to-back singles opened the inning, then Dubee got a strikeout. An RBI single followed, then Lombardozzi drove a liner down the right field line and into the bullpen, plating the second run of the inning. An intentional walk loaded the bases, and a grounder to third yielded a force out at third, but Harrison's throw to first rolled away from 1B Hague, and instead of an inning-ending double play, two more runs scored and the inning continued. Another single dropped in, in short left field, to drive in the fifth run of the inning. Craig Hansen relieved Dubee, and he got the pitcher Pena to fly out to end the inning.

Losses All Around

Losses for all of the Pirates' affiliates on Friday night:

Reading Phillies 9, Altoona Curve 4 ... (box)

The R-Phils attacked Curve starter Jared Hughes early, and the Curve bats could not keep up. Hughes retired the side in order in the 1st inning, but gave up 3 unearned runs on a walk, a single, and two errors in the 2nd inning -- the throwing error was by Hughes. A walk, a double, and a single added 2 more runs in the 3rd inning. In the 4th inning, Hughes gave up another 3 runs on two singles, a triple, and a double by former Indy Indian Tagg Bozied. Hughes was done after those 4 innings, having allowed 8 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks, though he struck out 6 batters.

The Curve hitters were hitless in the first 4 innings. The only batter to get on base was CF Anthony Norman, who reached in the 3rd on Bozied's fielding error at first. Two home runs, one by C Kris Watts in the 5th, and one by 2B Chase d'Arnaud in the 6th, got the Indians onto the scoreboard, but they were still trailing 8-2.

Each team scored in the 7th. Tom Boleska had relieved Hughes to begin the 5th inning, and he retired the first 7 batters he faced in order. Then in the 7th, he walked Bozied, then gave up a single and a double, allowing Bozied to score. In the bottom of the frame, 1B Matt Hague led off with a single, then scored on singles by Watts and Norman, to make it 9-3. The Curve added one more run in the bottom of the 9th, when SS Jordy Mercer, Hague, and RF Miles Durham led off the inning with three consecutive singles to load the bases. Watts' sacrifice fly plated Mercer, but two ground outs ended the inning without any further scoring. Bryan Morris pitched two perfect innings to wrap it up for the Curve.

The Curve have won the Eastern League's Western Division title, and will begin the first round of playoffs on Wednesday. None of the other playoff slots have been settled yet. The Bowie Baysox and the Harrisburg Senators are tied for second place in the Western Division. The Trenton Thunder are in first place in the Eastern Division, with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 2.5 games behind, with 3 games left to play.

Curve and Spikes Fall Short

Just two late games on Sunday, with one week to go ... The Bradenton Marauders and the West Virginia Power both have a scheduled day off today.

Richmond Flying Squirrels 5, Altoona Curve 4 .. (box)

Richmond broke a 4-4 tie with a run in the top of the 9th, and the Curve could not answer back. With Ramon Aguero on the mound to begin the 9th, a walk and a single put Richmond runners on the corners with no outs. Aguero got a strikeout, then gave up an RBI single to first. A double play, 2B Jordy Mercer to SS Chase d'Arnaud to 1B Matt Hague, ended the inning without the Squirrels scoring again. The Curve got one runner on base in the 9th, when pinch-hitter Jim Negrych singled to lead off the inning. CF Jose De Los Santos' sacrifice bunt moved Negrych to second base, but a fly out and a ground out ended the inning before Negrych could get any further.

The Curve had cracked the scoreboard first, with a run in the bottom of the 1st. D'Arnaud led off with a single, but was out at second on 3B Josh Harrison's grounder force out. Harrison stole both second and third base, then scored on C Hector Gimenez's RBI single.

Richmond took a 2-1 lead in the 2nd, with a lead-off homer. A fielding error by d'Arnaud, and a single put two runners on base. Another 4-6-3 double play moved the lead runner to third, and an RBI single drove in the run. Curve starter Jared Hughes gave up two more runs in the 3rd inning, with a hit batter, a triple, and a double.

The Curve tied the score in the 5th with a walk by Hughes, then back-to-back home runs by Chase d'Arnaud and Josh Harrison. It was d'Arnaud's 5th homer of the season, and Harrison's 4th blast.

Hughes pitched 6 innings and allowed those 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and a walk. He also struck out 2 batters. Bryan Morris, in the bullpen to keep his inning count down for the remainder of the season, pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing a lone single in each and striking out a batter in each.

Mercer Gets 4 Hits And Walk-Off; Cunningham Homers In The 12th

Less action than planned on Tuesday for the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates, mostly due to rain in the Bradenton area. The Marauders' game against the St. Lucie Mets was postponed. They will try for two tomorrow. Yesterday's game between the Fort Myer Miracle and the Marauders was also rained out, as well as the game that they tried to start on Sunday (but only got into the second inning). Those games will not be made up. The GCL Braves at GCL Pirates games were washed out yesterday. They tried to play two today, but only got one of the games in.

GCL Braves 5, GCL Pirates 1 .. (box)

Each team had 6 hits this afternoon, but the one that counted was the Braves' walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 7th. The Pirates began the scoring with a run in the 3rd inning. SS Kevin Mort led off with a double, then advanced to third base on DH Justin Howard's single into right field. The two pulled off a double steal, with Mort scoring on the steal of home. The Braves tied the score in the bottom of the 4th with a solo home run.

The Pirates loaded the bases in the 5th, on singles by Howard and CF Junior Sosa, and a walk by 2B Jorge Bishop. A strikeout ended that threat. Sosa also singled in the 1st inning and stole second base. LF Exicardo Cayonez also singled in the 4th, but was thrown out trying to steal second. 1B Jared Lakind made his pro debut, but went 0-for-3 at the plate.

Joely Rodriguez pitched 5 innings in his start, and scattered 3 hits, no walks. One of those hits was the solo homer in the 4th. Ryan Hafner also made his pro debut, pitching the 6th inning. He gave up a lead-off single in the 6th, then got a grounder force out and struck out the next two batters to end the inning and continue the tie. Hafner began the 7th inning with a single and a walk. Fraylin Campos relieved Hafner, but he hit the first batter he faced to load the bases. That set up Braves' 3B Brandon Drury for the game-winning grand slam.

Curve Lose In Extras; Marauders Split Twin Bill

Sunday's games in the Pirates' lower minor leagues were partially hampered by rain.... The GCL Pirates again had today off.

The State College Spikes and the Aberdeen IronBirds fell victim to rain. That game will not be made up, as the Spikes are not scheduled to play Aberdeen again this season. Tomorrow is an off day for the Spikes, then on Tuesday, Matt Curry, Adalberto Santos, and Jhonatan Ramos will be participating in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game.

West Virginia Power 3, Lexington Legends 3 -- suspended (box)

The Power and the Legends were supposed to play 2 games today, making up for last night's rainout. They got started on Game 1, but got only into the third inning (of a 7-inning game) before the rain returned. That game was suspended and the second game was postponed.

The game began with a scoreless first inning for both teams. In the top of the 2nd, LF Rogelios Noris and C Ramon Cabrera both singled, then with two outs, 1B Kyle Morgan blasted a 3-run homer. The Legends responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the frame on four singles. With one out in the top of the 3rd, the game was suspended. They will try to finish this one, then play a second game tomorrow.

New Hampshire FisherCats 3, Altoona Curve 2 (box)

More extra innings for the Curve and the FisherCats, but this one went New Hampshire's way. The Curve threatened in the 2nd inning, when both 1B Matt Hague and 2B Jordy Mercer led off with back-to-back singles. DH Jim Negrych's grounder forced out Hague at third, and C Kris Watts walked to load the bases. Another ground out ended the inning, though. A triple by SS Chase d'Arnaud and a sacrifice fly by 3B Josh Harrison in the 3rd inning did put the Curve onto the scoreboard with a 1-0 lead. They scored again in the 5th on an exciting play. CF Jose De Los Santos began with a single. D'Arnaud grounded to short, for what should have been a double play, but the New Hampshire second baseman missed the catch, and both runners were safe. De Los Santos tagged up and advanced to third on a fly out, then stole home in a double steal.

Rudy Owens pitched 5 scoreless innings in his start for the Curve, striking out 6 batters. He scattered 5 hits, no walks, and only had more than one runner on base at a time in the 3rd, but got out of it with a strikeout and a ground out. Jared Hughes relieved Owens to start the 6th. Hughes walked a batter then erased him with a double play in the 6th. In the 7th, Hughes hit the first batter, CF Callix Crabbe with a pitch. Crabbe stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on an RBI single. That batter was thrown out at second base by RF Miles Durham when he tried to stretch his single into a double. Moments later, a solo home run tied the game at 2-2. Hughes also pitched the 8th, and again gave up a walk and erased the runner with a double play.

The tie continued as the Curve went down in order in the 7th. D'Arnaud was hit with a pitch in the 8th, was bunted to second by Harrison, then stole third base, but was left stranded. Daniel Moskos worked around a lead-off single to keep the tie going in the top of the 9th. Jim Negrych singled in the bottom of the inning, but was erased in a double play. Derek Hankins retired the FisherCats in order in the top of the 10th. Kris Watts singled in the bottom of that inning, and was replaced by pinch-runner Anthony Norman, who was also left on base.

Hankins came out again for the 11th. With two outs, he gave up a single, then an RBI double to Crabbe, and the FisherCats had the 3-2 lead. Matt Hague walked with two outs in the bottom of the 11th, but a grounder off the bat of Negrych forced out Hague at second base to end the game.

Solid Starts From Locke, Adcock, Miller, and Cain

Minor League action with the Pirates' affiliates on Thursday... lots of good pitching

Altoona Curve 5, Trenton Thunder 3 (box)

The Curve came from behind to take this game from Trenton, despite being out-hit 8-7. Starter Jeff Locke had trouble in the 1st inning, when 3 runs scored on a double, three singles, a wild pitch, and a throwing error by C Hector Gimenez on a stolen base play. After that inning, Locke settled in, scattering four hits over the next 5 innings, while striking out 6 batters.

The Curve batters had only 2 hits over the first 3 innings, but they got going in the 4th to put one run on the board. LF Andrew Lambo walked, and 1B Matt Hague singled. A ground out to second by Gimenez moved both runners into scoring position, and 2B Jim Negrych picked up an RBI when his groundout scored Lambo. DH Yung Chi Chen got the 5th inning off to a good start with a triple into left field. He scored on CF Anthony Norman's sacrifice fly. A fielding error in left field put Norman on first base, but he was caught stealing moments later. SS Chase d'Arnaud kept the rally going with a walk, and he was successful in stealing second. 3B Josh Harrison was hit by a pitch, and a wild pitch moved d'Arnaud to third and Harrison to second. Lambo's grounder to second brought in d'Arnaud from third, and the score was tied at 3-3.

Jared Hughes took over for Locke for the final three innings. He held the Thunder to just a walk in the 7th, retiring the other 9 batters he faced, with the help of some outstanding outfield work, particularly by Norman, and an infield gem by Negrych. The Curve threatened in the 6th, when RF Miles Durham singled and Chen walked with 2 outs, but both were left on base. Harrison began the 7th inning with a walk, and with two outs, he stole second base. That put him into scoring position, so that when Hague took a 3-0 pitch into left field for a double, Harrison was able to score the go-ahead run. Gimenez was intentionally walked to get to Negrych, who obligingly grounded to second base for what should have been the final out of the inning. But the Trenton second baseman made a fielding error -- Negrych was safe at first, and Hague scored an insurance run.

Three Spikes Are All-Stars; Two Out 9th Inning Rally Gives Power The Win

News and action for the Pirates' lower minor league affiliates on Sunday. The GCL Pirates and the Bradenton Marauders had scheduled days off today.

Three members of the State College Spikes have been named to the National League squad for the New York-Penn League All-Star Game, which will be played on August 17th at the home of the Staten Island Yankees. IF Matt Curry, the Pirates' 16th round pick in the 2010 draft, has a .331 batting average, with 3 homers and 19 RBI. OF Adalberto Santos was the Pirates' 22nd round pick in this year's draft. He is hitting .313 with 2 homers and 29 RBI, and is tied for second in the league with 37 runs scored. Reliever Jhonathan Ramos has a 3-1 record and one save, with a 1.54 ERA. He leads the league in lowest number of baserunners allowed at 6.56/9 innings. Opposing batters are hitting just .169 against him.

Tri-City Valley Cats 4, State College Spikes 1 (box)

Tri-City took the early lead and never gave it up in this evening's game. CF Mel Rojas and 2B Gift Ngoepe led the Spikes with 2 hits each, but the team managed only one run. Starter Zach Fuesser got into trouble right away in his 5th start for the Spikes. Two singles, a stolen base, and a 2-RBI single gave Tri-City 2 runs in the top of the 1st. They added another run in the 2nd on a double, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly. After a single, a wild pitch, a balk, and a walk in the 4th, Fuesser was relieved by Ryan Beckman, who finished the inning. Beckman also gave up a walk and a wild pitch in the 5th, but kept Tri-City from scoring in that inning, but he surrendered a run on a single and a double in the 6th.

The Spikes had only one base runner over the first 3 innings, when Rojas walked to lead off the bottom of the 1st. RF Adalberto Santos singled and stole second base in the 4th, and both C Miguel Mendez and DH Cole White singled with two outs in the 5th, but they were all left on base. Ngoepe bounced a ground-rule double over the center field wall to begin the 6th, and Santos walked, but three strikeouts left both of them stranded also. The Spikes scored their only run in the 7th. 3B Kelson Brown led off with a double, and he scored on Rojas' single. Ngoepe also singled, and Santos walked, loading the bases with two outs. A grounder ended the inning, though, and the Spikes were held to just that one run. They threatened again in the 9th, when White walked and Rojas singled, but could not push the runner across the plate.

Mitch Fienemann pitched the last 3 innings for the Spikes, and allowed only one hit, while striking out 3 batters.

Marauders and Spikes Win Shut-Outs

Sunday afternoon and evening with the Pirates' minor league affiliates.....as usual, the GCL Pirates are off today. The West Virginia Power and the Hagerstown Suns apparently did not have any sun, and their game was postponed. They will try for two on Monday.

Altoona Curve 6, Trenton Thunder 4 (box)

The Thunder thundered early, but the Curve stormed back with 6 runs in the 5th inning for the win. C Kris Watts and LF/CF Anthony Norman each went 2-for-3, and Norman picked up 2 RBI. Starter Tony Watson lasted only 3 innings, and he gave up runs in each of those innings. A hit batter and an RBI single gave Trenton one run in the 1st inning. A lead off home run began the 2nd inning, then a single, a ground-rule double, and a sacrifice fly added 2 more runs in the 2nd. Another lead-off home run in the 3rd gave the Thunder a 4-0 lead. Jared Hughes relieved Watson and pitched 5 scoreless innings, scattering 3 hits and 2 walks. He was credited with the win, since he was the pitcher of record when the Curve took the lead. Derek Hankins gave up a triple in the 9th, but left that runner stranded to earn his 5th save.

The Curve had posted only 2 hits over the first four innings. Then came the fireworks in the 5th, when the Curve sent 10 batters to the plate. DH Brandon Jones opened the inning with a walk, then singles by RF Miles Durham and Watts loaded the bases. Norman bounced a ground-rule double over the wall in right field, scoring Jones and Durham. 3B Josh Harrison singled, bringing in Watts. Norman scored on a throwing error when the Thunder tried to pick-off Harrison. The Thunder got two outs at that point, 1B Matt Hague singled, plating Harrison. Hague stole second base, and scored on 2B Jordy Mercer's RBI single. The Curve had only one hit in the rest of the game, a single by Norman, who was then caught stealing second base.
