WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
The Pirates signed Maguire out of Australia just before spring training in 2020. He was one of their more significant signings in the 2019-20 period. Maguire has above average speed that may allow him to stay in center, and a good arm. He also has above average bat speed and may have some power potential.
2020 The pandemic wiped out what would have been Maguire’s debut season. 2021 Maguire had a difficult debut season. He played two games in late June, then sat out with an injury until the end of July. After playing semi-regularly in August, he missed September with another injury. When he played, he struggled to hit, although he did walk a lot. He mostly played center. 2022 Maguire returned to the FCL, where he divided his time more or less equally among the three outfield positions. He made progress at the plate, especially with his K rate, and seemed to be turning a corner in July, when he posted an OPS of .748. In August, though, he went just 4-for-28. Maguire hasn’t stepped forward yet and doesn’t appear ready for full season ball. In prior years, the Pirates could have sent him to Bristol in 2023, but now the choices are a return to the FCL, which never seems to accomplish anything, and moving up to Bradenton. He won’t go anywhere before mid-season, though, as he started off on the 60-day injured list. |
