WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

Some teams liked Apostel as a pitcher, as his fastball got up to 92 mph, but the Pirates liked his bat and power potential.  Despite his size, they think he can stick at third.

2016
DSL:  205/308/275, 171 AB, 7 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 24 BB, 61 K, 1-2 SB

Apostel struggled in his debut, striking out in over a third of his ABs and not hitting for much power.  He also had problems with errors, committing eight in just 21 games at third (he spent more time at DH than in the field).

2017
DSL:  258/422/495, 198 AB, 12 2B, 4 3B, 9 HR, 56 BB, 49 K, 4-9 SB

The Pirates sent Apostel back to the DSL and he put up big power numbers, finishing tied for second in the league in HRs.  He started slowly in June, with a .652 OPS, but caught fire in July, putting up a 1.219 OPS.  At the same time, he stopped seeing a lot fewer strikes;  he walked eight times in June and 26 in July, in almost exactly the same number of plate appearances.  He finished the season with the league’s second-highest walk total.  Possibly as a result of not seeing many strikes, Apostel cooled off in August, but still had a .907 OPS.  He continued to have error problems, but his fielding percentage at least improved from .893 the previous year to .911.

Apostel was in fall instructional league in 2017 and impressed the Pirates enough that they decided to skip him over the GCL and send him to Bristol.
