WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE
Umana was a top pitching prospect in Nicaragua when the Pirates signed him.  He’s not a big guy and throws his fastball about 88-90 mph, but he has a good curve and change.  By 2023, he’d dropped down to a low sidearm slot, with velocity in the low-80s.

2019
DSL:  9-1-0, 2.39 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 64.0 IP, 1.1 BB/9, 8.3 K/9

Umana made 13 starts in the DSL and was one of two pitchers to win more than seven games.  He didn’t dominate, but opponents had only a .283 OBP against him.

2021
A:  0-4-3, 6.21 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 42.0 IP, 1.1 BB/9, 5.8 K/9
A+:  0-0-0, 31.50 ERA, 3.50 WHIP, 2.0 IP, 4.5 BB/9, 4.5 K/9

The Pirates sent Umana to Bradenton in early June.  He spent the rest of the season there, except for a two-game stretch when he filled in at Greensboro.  (One game resulted in a meltdown in which he allowed four home runs in an inning, the other in a scoreless inning.)  With the Marauders, his stuff just didn’t play well.  He missed very few bats and opponents hit .322 against him.

2022
A:  2-0-0, 2.77 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 39.0 IP, 1.4 BB/9, 7.6 K/9
A+:  0-0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP, 1.0 IP, 18.0 BB/9, 9.0 K/9

The Pirates sent Umana to Bradenton in early May and he spent most of the rest of the season there pitching in long relief.  He got into one game with Greensboro at season’s end.  He got good results, still with very low walk and K rates.

Umana will probably need to add some velocity to get far as a prospect.
