WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE |
Abernathy transferred from Feather River College to Pacific after three seasons, although he missed the entire year of one. He did not get much pitching experience at Pacific, pitching a total of 20.1 innings over the last two seasons. He made up some innings in summer league ball after last year, with high walk and strikeout rates over 20 innings of work in the Great West League. In 17 appearances this year, he had a 7.00 ERA in 18 innings, with six walks and 18 strikeouts. Prior to the transfer, he pitched three innings in 2015, red-shirted in 2016 and then pitched 71 innings over 13 starts in 2017. He throws 90-93 with a curve and change, and throws with a jerky motion that may make it a little harder for hitters to pick up the ball. Abernathy played a lot of third base in high school and hit some while at Feather River. He signed a week after the draft.
2019 Abernathy pitched in short relief for Bristol, serving as the team’s primary closer. Apart from some control issues, he was very effective, missing a lot of bats and holding opponents to a 170/291/216 line. Abernathy had a very good debut. It remains to be seen how well his stuff and delivery will play against higher level hitters. |
