WTM’S PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Ludwig is a Yale senior who improved significantly in his last year.  Baseball America didn’t rate him among its top 500 draft prospects and didn’t include him in its regional writeup.  He throws the standard four pitches, hitting 94 with his fastball, and had solid K rates in college.  The Pirates signed him for $5,000, considerably less than the slot amount of $125,000.

2012
A-:  3-1-1, 1.05 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, 25.2 IP, 1.1 BB/9, 7.4 K/9
A:  0-1-0, 3.60 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, 5.0 IP, 1.8 BB/9, 10.8 K/9

Ludwig pitched most of the summer out of the State College bullpen and did very well, allowing very few baserunners and just a .196 opponents’ average.  He moved up to West Virginia for four games and continued to pitch well.

2013
A:  6-0-1, 3.12 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 49.0 IP, 2.9 BB/9, 8.1 K/9
A+:  2-2-0, 3.90 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 55.1 IP, 2.3 BB/9, 6.7 K/9

Ludwig spent the first half of the season in the West Virginia bullpen, then moved up to Bradenton, where he pitched mostly out of the rotation.  He generally pitched well at both stops.  On the season, he didn’t have much of a platoon split, as left-handed hitters posted an OPS of .686 against him, compared to .643 by right-handed hitters.

2014
A+:  3-3-2, 3.84 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 68.0 IP, 2.5 BB/9, 6.8 K/9
AA:  3-4-0, 5.62 ERA, 1.68 WHIP, 40.0 IP, 3.2 BB/9, 5.4 K/9

The Pirates sent Ludwig back to Bradenton and he continued in the swing role.  He made two trips up to Altoona, one in late June and one at the end of July, when the Curve needed a starter.  Ludwig pitched respectably in high A but struggled in AA, where opponents batted .331 against him.  He had trouble with right-handed hitters, who batted 311/369/498 against him on the year.

Ludwig may have hit a wall in AA, but could get a chance there again in 2015.  He was eligible for the Rule 5 draft, but wasn’t a candidate to be added to the roster.  He also wasn’t on any roster at the start of the season, but likely will appear with Altoona or Bradenton at some point.
