WTM’s PLAYER PROFILE

Dorrian’s situation when the Pirates signed him was a bit unorthodox.  He was drafted by Atlanta out of high school in 2014 and actually signed with the Braves, but he decided to go to college instead of playing pro ball.  That left him ineligible for Division I baseball, so he went to junior college for two years, then to Division II Lynn U.  He was also ineligible for the 2018 draft, so he had to wait until afterward.  Several teams showed interest, but the Pirates signed him.  Dorrian put up big numbers at Lynn in a high-offense environment.  He batted 372/448/587 as a junior and then 394/471/798 as a senior.  (In his senior year, the team batted 294/374/488.)  He’s played second, third and short.  The Pirates signed Dorrian to a minor league deal.

2018
R:  328/427/511, 137 AB, 10 2B, 6 3B, 1 HR, 24 BB, 24 K, 2-3 SB
R+:  367/457/667, 30 AB, 2 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 4 BB, 8 K

Dorrian spent most of the season in the GCL, but moved up to Bristol for nine games.  He played mostly third, with a few games at short and second.  Dorrian hit extremely well at both stops, with good power.  He had defensive problems, with 14 errors and an .899 fielding percentage at third, and four errors in just 30 innings at short.

Dorrian put up very good numbers for a free agent, but he was still old for the levels at which he played.  The Pirates will move him up to Greensboro in 2019.  Due to the odd events around his original signing, Dorrian is already eligible for the Rule 5 draft.
