Betts went to Georgia in 2013, then transferred to Chipola college after one year. His numbers with Georgia were poor, but he improved with Chipola. He did deal with some control issues, but didn’t give up many hits. He displays a fastball that has been reported at 93, touching higher at times. He was 87-89 MPH out of high school, so it looks like he’s added some velocity the last two years. He’s been described as having a violent delivery by Baseball America. He pairs the fastball with a slider. Betts pitched mostly in relief for Chipola and entirely at Georgia. He signed a week after the draft.
2014 The Pirates sent Betts to Bristol, where he pitched rather sparingly out of the bullpen. I don’t know what the reason for that may have been. The ERA is misleading, because he allowed six runs (out of his season total of ten) in one inning in his last outing on August 15, then didn’t pitch again. 2015 Apart from the one outing, Betts didn’t pitch badly in 2014, but the Pirates sent him back to Bristol. He regressed from the previous year, apart from a high K rate, with control problems being the biggest issue. Betts hasn’t made any progress, but it wouldn’t be like the Pirates to send him back to Bristol for a third season. He could appear at Morgantown. |
